It is getting more and more ridiculous out here...
Many of us are witnessing nowadays how some shippers now require that drivers (electronically) sign the receipt of the goods (BOL) without the document even being printed yet nor them seeing what they are signing for!
Anotherwords, a driver is basically putting his/hers signature on a blank sheet of paper (actually ecectronic pad) AGREEING IN ADVANCE with what ever the shipper might want to type and print above.
We drivers get already screwed enough without crap like that in addition. And shouldn't a practice like that be illegal?
Any thoughts?
Drivers' Signature on Blank BOL at Shippers' !!!?

Write "shipper load & count" along with your signatue
Everett, Laner99, Freebird135 and 1 other person Thank this. -
i normally do that all the time, but under circumstances like this you can't...you never even see the copy that the shipper keeps...you are handed only the carrier's copy with your 'signature' already there.
-
The shippers copy looks just like the drive copy so dont sweat it.
Its nothing new, many places have had this for decades.
Its simple and cost effective, dont want to sign? find another load.

-
was just waiting for a *insult removed* like you to say something 'smart' as you just did.
find another load? just like you would have done yourself, right? yeah right!!!
going on for decades? ...guess i just started driving last month or so...
simple and cost effective? because saves the ink in a pen?Last edited by a moderator: Jun 18, 2011

I was with a trainer along time ago and he printed SLC (shipper load and count) above his name. They shipper got all bent out of shape and made up a new set of bills. My trainer just "signed" Shipper Load and Count instead of his signature. Shipper never said a word gave us our bills and we were on our way.

SLC "USED TO" have weight, not any more.
First hand exp will learn you a thing or two on the current variances. -
I load for a couple of shippers that use the signing pads.
It's the same as signing regular bills after they're printed.
Of course......I haul a tank......so "Shippers Load and Count" doesn't
mean a lot either.
Sure, the shipper loaded it............I loaded on the scale in a lot of cases
so the weight isn't an issue. I'm permitted for overweight and over axle in
my home state, so that's not an issue.
I've NEVER had any issues with missing freight either and my receiver is usually
happy to see me with my freight. If they're not ready for my freight within
2 hours. I get paid detention.....usually while I get a nap.

If you're not allowed to be at the doors counting as it's loaded then Shippers Load & Count keeps my butt in the clear if something is wrong on delivery. If they give me trouble about writing Shippers Load & Count on the BOL then I nicely suggest that they unload it & allow me to count as it's loaded, never had a problem with that yet.
