besides running team SUCKS. the vast majority of husbands and wives who run team don't really run team rather they end up running a log book and a half or less

I noticed this too when I was under the illusion that my wife might join me.:biggrin_2559:

That would be a real problem unless you could get them to take the load early. I'll bet that wouldn't happen often enough to be worthwhile.

From my research, there can be a bit of waiting involved in expedited. That will work against your miles too.

I might be wrong, but if I were young again and my wife would run with me, I'd probably run a reefer. I think that might offer the best miles.

Thank you everyone for the great info! We're going to drive with a company for a year or two before we make the decision to buy our own tractor. We are selling our home and will take down time at various locations throughout the country where our families live. So we'll probably be rolling for at least 6 weeks at a time before taking a few days off to see family and recharge. Thanks again for all the info!

Okay, that's better than your opening post... otherwise I was going to thank you for putting a low-mileage, slightly used Volvo on the market and paying the initial depreciation.

Wow.... talk about living in the past.

I (and many others) haven't done less than 25,000 mile oil changes for over a decade. By your calculation, I would be running 50,000 miles a month to change twice a month. And since I do my own, I haven't had a $200 oil change and lube in one heck of a long time. I got out of my last truck at 1.4 million miles and the engine was never opened up except for overheads and one injector. Current truck has 718,000 miles on it and the oil samples look as good or better than engines with half that age. So, I don't think my 25,000+ mile oil changes are going to change anytime soon. Some are going really far on oil changes with bypass filters and such. Twice a month oil changes, even for a team is down right insane.

$75 truck washes? Yes, but weather usually doesn't have me doing that any more than every two weeks at the most. And there is the coin drop wash that is considerably cheaper. I rely on a technology and check the weather forcasts where I am running. That iPhone has sure paid for itself. If it is going to rain on me in the next couple of days, I ain't washin' the truck.

Not going to average 6.8? I do, and that is during the winter. During the summer months, my average is in the mid 7's. And it has been that way with my last truck (96 FLD with N-14) and the one I have now ('06 Intl 9400i with ISX). Last fueling was 8.3 (pump to pump hand calculated) thanks to the midwest winds dying down somewhat and only 30,000 lb in the box. Sure, there are many that can't reach those numbers, but there are many that do and even do a little better. My numbers are good enough that with my mpg and discounts on fuel, the FSC is almost covering the entire cost of my fuel except for a penny or two a mile. And no, I don't have to drive 55 to get those numbers. I don't run 80 mph either. A little common sense and moderate driving can get most people into decent mpg numbers.

Things are not as negative as your post would suggest. When a person is serious about this and not just owning a truck to strut around and proclaim to the world that they are an O/O, they can usually do ok. But they have to go into it with the right business mindset. And I will agree, the first year is the breaker. But that is true with just about every business out there. Is is well known that most business' will fail in the first year. It is tough, no matter what you start up.

    well la de ####### da....

who cares? all the truck stops charge $200, speedco is like $230. so why don't you go change his il for him cheaper?

he's the one talking 5k miles a month. I do 20k mi oil changes but I know alot of owners who do 10k. once again, did I ask how often you change your oil? I was making a point that he need to seriously look into this alot more
