Hello - I hope that I am not posting this on the wrong board. If I am, please feel free to move it where it should go.
I am here because my husband has been discusssing becoming a truck driver for several years now. Just recently he has become more serious about wanting to do this - but he isn't sure where to start (or in better terms, which company to start with).
There are several "schools" in our area that will help you get your CDL and help you find a job - though many of those schools are expensive. They've mentioned financing - though I'm not sure that's the route we want to go.
We've looked online at several trucking companies as well. My husband called SWIFT and spoke with a recruiter. Of course they always make it seem "too good to be true", but we also know that that's how a lot of the companies typically operate.
My husband was actually going to go with SWIFT and do the schooling, but I've heard and read some not-so-good things about this company.
My husband would really like to get into the trucking industry, but we're not sure which company he should start with. Regardless, he knows that which ever company he chooses, he will be sticking with them for at least the first year to get in the experience.
Any suggestions on other companies my husband should contact or look into? A friend of mine started through Schneider and said to avoid SWIFT. Are there other decent companies out there that my husband should be considering that will do the schooling and training?
Thank you all so much for taking the time to read and respond. We greatly appreciate it!

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Unless you live within 100miles of the terminal, WS won't even consider you as a newbie.
It's company policy. Thats the word I recived from the recruiter i talked with. -
My .02, I would suggest your hubby go with the Orange Army (SNI), there seems to be more positive posts here than negative, plus they haul so much freight (of all kinds) that your hubby could get a lot of different experience- Dryvan, Flatbed, Tanker. And one more suggestion, if at all possible, hubby should hang out there for his first TWO (2) years: this will not only give him more experience (which a lot of companies are now changing their hiring requirements to min. of two years), but it gives him more time if he chooses to move between divisions.
And if he decides not to go with schneider, then I suggest he go with a flatbed co, because pulling a van can be braindead work and is pretty easy to learn.
Good luck!
PS- watkins Sheperd has a terminal in Brownstown, so since you live in SE MI, you can check them out too.
