Communication, phone calls, text messages (not when driving), IM's, chat, etc. I always text her when I get rolling and when I go down for the night. Make the most of your home time and it'll work.

Definitely communication. We do most of our communication via phone calls. The big help there is that our cell plan includes free mobile-to-mobile so our phone chats don't eat into our plan minutes. We can both talk, and often spend a couple hours a day on the phone with each other throughout the course of the day.

I usually wait for him to call me in the morning when I wake up unless I know he's rolling already, and we always talk before sacking out for the night too.

I'm not out on the road yet, but I don't imagine it's that different from non-trucking jobs I've had that kept me out on the road. Phone home every night, don't screw around, and when you are home make sure that you take her out for dinner and do the yard work and maybe the dishes or laundry.

I will have been married 22 years this August, and I spent probably a decade of that in jobs where I was away constantly, so I must have gotten something right.

I retired May of 2010 after 20 years in the Navy. Towards the end of that Summer, my spouse came home to me watching a baseball game. Looked at me and said, "You can't do this for the next 20 years. I'm not used to you being home everyday. You have to go find something to do!" After some research and soul searching, I landed as a truck driver. Was something I always wanted to do anyway and I grew up in a trucking family as well. I guess you could say that my family has always been serving their country...LOL!

Anyway, we talk on the phone at least twice a day and make the most of my home time. I honestly think that us being separated by work over the 22 years we've been together is the main thing that has kept us together for so long. We really value our time together and never take advantage of each other.
