Need some info about Con-Way apprentice program.

    apply now n e ways for the apprentice program now!!! cuz the haz-mat where im from normally takes a month to get. I needed to forms of id jus to take the test. also by working the dock, u will learn the placards and classes as well, and the instructor will go over haz-mat with u. hagerstown is huge, we run there from where i am and takes about 4.5 to 5 hours to get there, think round trip its 600 miles or so. ill never c that run n e time soon but if i do a saturday run i will. that pretty good with the tests, i failed mulitple times for general knowledge. only thing thats a con with conway now if that theres no runs for me as of now. I only worked monday for 2.5 hours. u go onto a flex board, where u call in the morning or night whichever they put u on to c wut time u have to go in at. my terminal for days is 6am to call in. although my place is cool, they do allow me to come at night to help with outbound, then hostle some trailers around to make inbound easier.

    How difficult is it for a noob to pass the driver apprentice training program at Con-Way? My potential boss said that if they see some people are not making the cut while they are in class they will boot them out.

    as long as you work your butt off on the dock, show you belong there, TRY in the class, if you have a question ASK for help dont be afraid, then they will keep you.

    I got hired with everything but no exp, I worked for 1 week and they were so impressed that the SCM wanted me in the class asap. But the personel manager said no I got more people coming, they hired another guy with 23 years dock exp fromm Roadway express, which they were impressed with as well, and they wouldve jus had us both start, but they hired an ex bus driver with a permit so they wanted him to prove himself and that delayed mine and the other guys class time. Whatever it happens but we started class end of march.

    You will have a bunch of tests, they will make you re-take some fake tests from the DMV like general knowledge, haz-mat, combination, doubles/triples, and air brakes along with a few other class room lessons. My instructor was really cool, would give us breaks, or get breakfast etc.

    our first skill driving was learning how to drive jus the tractor, meaning practicing shifting, i had trouble on down shifting but eventually got it. You will learn how to hook and drop trailers, hook up a set of doubles, drive around the yard with them. You will spend a lot of time backing, and those pups can be tough since you lose them very easily. I didnt have too much trouble since Ive been backing trailers since I was 16, the bus driver had the most difficult since he wasnt used to it, and the roadway guy had trouble with the pups, but with a 48 hed get it in 1 shot no prob.

    The roadway guy and I finished in middle of May and the bus driver went out driving with another trainer for two weeks before his road test. He failed it 4 times due to the fact that the road test guys fail con-way drivers since a lot of schools are angry they lose business from that, and he just got his license 2 weeks ago after being there since Feburary. All in all he did come to work everyday, never complained and did what he was told so they hung on to him, if you do that you will be fine
