I think being an apprentice is the best kind of training, but people can't be bothered today unless they gettin that PAPERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. so the govt will continue to try and force success and eliminate all CMV accidents(C.S.A being the latest addition) dumping money into a problem that lies not with CMV drivers, but how easy it is to get a class C.. just my opinion! put a 3 strikes and your banned from driving rule on class C drivers and i guarantee they will be more careful and stop thinking they are the #### cutting off big rigs

Not all ways true, first you gotta make sure that the state you live in have the funds.I had read not all states are handing out free cash for people go back to school.

Schools give the inexperience a foundation to build from starting with the classroom, an instructor and testing of your knowledge. A truck and a trainer is hardly a place to start learning the rules and regulations. It needs done in a classroom environment.
It's also the first level to weed out the impossible. You can't just throw someone in a truck and they go out there and kill someone. Oops, you ain't cut out for it.
Just like any schooling you have structure with the curriculum. You just don't live and learn. The road is no place for mistakes.
If you go to a community college, many qualify for Pell grants and low interest Stafford loans. Alot better than going to some of these puppy mills that charge you double.BigJohn54 Thanks this. -
My state will if they have the funding, if you agree to go OTR and if you are unemployed. -
This makes me think about what they tell you in aviation when you are getting your pilot's certificate. I wish they would stress this more in trucking.
They tell you when you get your pilot's certificate, that doesn't mean you are skilled, it means you have a license to learn. This couldn't be more true in either profession! -
I did it this way: Bought a tractor, studied CDL book, passed computer test for Temps, rented trailer. For about three weeks, spent an hour a day in a lot with a dock, backing, maneuvering, etc.... went to take pre-trip test...passed...took skills test...failed on a cone...went back next day...passed...instant CDL class a. One month of part time work at it.

Tour Bus? You don't need a Class A to drive a bus. A Class B will put you behind the wheel. Why waste all that time and money on an "A" when you already have a job lined up needing a "B"?
Check out the Community College in your area. They usually have Driving Schools for any class of licence and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than your typical Truck Driving School.
Good luck.
