Finished trucking school and was trying to be careful in choosing a trucking company. Chose Werner based on being told by recruiter that I could be on Wal Mart account out of Gas City, IN. and drive only in INdiana, Michigan and Ohio. Confirmed with recruiter that we could take trucks home with us on hometime. I live in NOrthern Indiana and we were all advised we were eligible for this dedicated account. After orientation and on trainer truck, called in and was advised by driver placement that Wal Mart doesn't allow trucks to be taken home and the distance from where I live would make it difficult for anyone in my area to be on this account. Spoke to supervisor in SDM department and was told that on those accounts, the wording clearly states the trucks cannot go home. I never saw literature as that information is not given out. I'm no longer with Werner.

My friend, who lives in South Bend, was with Werner for about 6 months. He lives here, but they made his home terminal Chattanooga, TN. After spending 2+ weeks on the road, he'd get to Chatt for hometime, and spend about 15 hrs on a bus one way home! Then 15 hrs back.
-
My trainer also told me I could go home over july 4th weekend since he was going back to Oregon. We confirmed by calling in and was advised to call back a week prior to going home to make plans. When I did as instructed I was told I could not go home until I had 140 drive hours. There was no way I was going to have that by time to go home. I was then offered to go home on unpaid leave. I said yes. I told them I wanted off the team truck but they just ignored these requests and kept dispatching us on long hauls requiring truck to keep being on team status. I could never get in touch with my personal SDM. Finally just left the truck in Mempis. Rented a car and went home.

That is flippin' nuts. No excuse for that. I take it he's with a better company now....

You know what the acronym W.E.R.N.E.R. is don't you? It means: "We Employ Re.tards No Experience Required"
This is more so for those who run the company and dispatch drivers than the drivers themselves.Last edited: Jun 30, 2011

First of all Weclome to the Trucker's Forum!
As for werner, gotta tell you,Werner is a joke the worse trucking company by far.I did 2 weeks with them and quit! They don't care about there drivers and they can give a rat ##### if you needed to be home. There better companies out there just keep doing some home work, you'll find something better. -
Weird question: Is it common practice for recruiters to work in truck stops? I had a Werner recruiter approach me once at the Pilot in Dallas (guessing since the terminal was very close). This was a couple of years back.

I was at that awful Petro in East St. Louis, IL and recruiters from Interstate (green Volvos) were out there grilling burgers and polish sausages to give away. But they'd also try to recruit you.

I pull Werner loads and trailers but don't specifically work FOR Werner thank God (no Qualcomm, e-logs, speed governor) and I have noticed they aren't the friendliest bunch. I will give them a wave as I pass by and I often get a look like i just took a dump in their yard. And forget about a light flash!
Now don't get me wrong, I've met a few nice guys, especially waiting for pickups, like at Pratt paper in shreveport. We kept each other company as we waited for docks. OTOH, there were a team and another solo driver who didn't even acknowledge we were there. -
Im on a l.o.a from werner, looking for a new company, I had to threatin to quit twice to get my hometime. I knew how full of crap they were, but I had to start somewhere. I learned my lesson
Yodler Thanks this.
