Where can I get a criminal background check at?
My driving record is not bad I do have a speeding ticket from last year and a Non truck route ticket from New York but it does not really say what is for. I have spoken to the a recruiter at a PTDI certifies course form the local college. I told her about my tickects and what the last 2 years shows on my driving record. I also told her I about my younger days of points suspensions and she said I should be fine. Most companies go back 3 years on ur Driving record anyways.
As for a having a criminal history as in felonies never had one.
I know what is involved in OTR. I want to live on the road and travel to see the US and Canada while getting paid. Home is the least of my concerns. I want to DRIVE the BIG RIGS! I dont have a house or apartment to worry about the truck will be my home. I want to meet PEOPLE in my travels and see the greatest country on Earth even thou we have tools in office.
I dont care about what kind of trailer is it, I want to Haul it all. Expediting is what I have done for the last 4 years on a local scale. I have driven 24 fT box trucks, Flat beds, reefer units, cars and my cargo van automatic or manual it doesnt matter.
I have enjoyed my 989 mile haul to Dallas Texas, Fort Smith Arkansas, SouthSide North Caroline, Oakville Ontario Canada and ect. I love to drive. Besides I look good in a big ole truck
Thanks ladywrongway03 for the info, but I dont drive a minvan its Full size Chevy Express cargo van.
Anutter wanna be trucker!

You're very welcome. Just be cautions in getting your information from school or trucking company employees or recruiters. Their job is to reel you in and then they don't care whether you get qualified or not. From my research, I's say five years is the norm on tickets and such. Felonies run from 5 - 10 years. Criminal charges that aren't felonies have little effect. Drug, theft, sex related and violent crimes can be a problem, even if a misdemeanor.
Good luck! -
Sorry, forgot to address the background check. In my state you used to be able to go to the Highway Patrol and pay a fee and get a certified copy. It was the same in Oklahoma although I can't remember what office did it. Nowdays I think it would be done online. Try Googling your state + background check. Also try state criminal records.
I'm not sure what trucking companies use for theirs. IMHO, this has been one of the biggest jokes in past history. It may have changed. Use to be you could run a check on someone and not find felony convictions. It's been ten years since I have been involved in any checks, but it used to be the only way to get a complete history was to know every place the person had lived. Then you had to check each county in each state.
In Missouri we now have a website called "Casenet". You can access traffic violations as well as criminal charges, on convictions of course, in the entire state. -
Phat Kat, Good luck with your new adventure, Big John is giving it to you straight, but driving 900 miles one time, and driving a 24 ft box, aint the same same as OTR, I am not tying to offend you just give it to you straight. I am by far no seasoned ole vet of the road. I was lucky enough and persistent enough that I onlydrove OTR for around 6 months, now I am going on 4 months of local in Chicago lucky enough dock to dock a good percentage of the time. it is not as easy as it seems it is very stressfull alot of the times having to be in control of that much truck and watching out for all the stupid 4 wheelers that have no clue what a stupid move they just did in front of you. I had a car load of kids the other day try to squeeze by me and a concrete wall on the enterance ramp of I-290 and Cicero ave. Do I let them in or be a touh guy and squeeze them out. I know what I wanted to do, but let them go by me at 50 mph, they had no clue what a dumb a-- move that was. Point is if I was not paying attention who knows what would have happend, one things for sure I would be out of a job already. Driving down the road is the easy part. Do your research see what is going to work for you, but you will meet some interesting people and see some of this great country, and it is not all beautiful. Good luck

I hope everyone had a safe 4th of July.
Ok I am going to the DMV tomorrow to get my 3 year driving record and then Send in for a life time record this week which can take up to 21 days to get back.
Now I did a criminal background check on my self online through net detective and didnt find anything. I had a friend who does have a criminal background so I ran him just to make sure the Net Detective work and show enough pulled all is offensives up. So I confident that I have no felonies, traffic misdemeanor but those have 10+ years ago.
I have been reading this forum for about a month now and there is a ton of good advice. I am learning just from reading this forum, but there are lot topic to read. This would take one awhile to read them all.
I sold my city box truck to go to the local college for cdl school, they told me if i can get $1500 they can finance the rest. Now the cost is $5995 for a 3 week 200 hr coarse and the interest rates is 12%. So in all total cost is about $6700.
What Im looking for in a company is good training, paid training & orientation, vacations time, Detention time, paid layovers, direct deposit and fast response on break downs.
So I am think about starting to put apps in soon as i get my 3 year DMV abstract before and see if I get any bites before going to school.
Would this be smart thing to do? -

rayodeluz I have read the ORG and very gracious he post his ordeal from start finish of his CDL schooling and I my self wonder what happen to him. I hope everything is all right with him and his family.
Ohio DMV Driving record goes back 3 years, so I stop in today and got my report back. I have one speeding ticket doing 40 in a 25 mph zone back in July of 2010. I have drivin that route many time heading to work and it was my fault for not paying attention deserve the two points. I also have a violation from New York back in Aug of 2010, thou it doesn't say what it is for and no points was accumulated on it. The tickect was for not following truck route, I learned my lesson real quick. Plan ur route to deliver in cities like Manhattan, New York making sure you take the truck routes.
Now I have mailed out my life time driving report to Ohio BMV and should get that back in the next week or two. I will look it over and post what I find. I know I had several point suspension years ago, those where my young and dumb years of driving.
I realize that what I have done in the past 4 years of courier/hotshot business doesnt compare to Driven big riggs, however I had deadlines to meet as well. Driving 989 miles one way does not make me an expert by far in a box truck. I have been driving box trucks off and on for about 6-7 years and I know how a truck driver feels about the 4 wheelers putting the squeeze on us. Four wheels have no clue as how dangerous there actions of of cutting us off, jamming on there brakes as the cut us off, flying from one lane to another, or tailgating us. The have no concept that a box, flat bed, dry van, refeer from 24 ft to triples we can not stop on a dime or maneuver like 4 wheelers.
But I think I have an edge over your average Joe as to what to expect on the road in a commercial vehicle, I drive long hours 12- 16 hour a day in my cargo. My time driving a box truck does not compare to driving a rig, however there are similar things that a cdl and non cdl drivers have in common.
We have to have a medical certificate to drive, we have to follow commercial laws, we have to stop at all state scales and make sure our paper work is in order. We have to do log books or time card for driving more then 150 air nautical miles and whatch out for 4 wheelers and hazardous situations.
I have learned alot by trail an error, but over all I know my experience will make me better then most then in Cdl School. I also understand I have yet alot to learn and willing to do so.
Reading this forum has help me out and taught me a few things. And the fact there are real truckers posting replies to the same question over and over from greenhorns as my self is a tremendous help.
I have picked up a copy of Ohio BMV CDL handbook and will be studying up on it.Last edited: Jul 11, 2011

Phat Kat, good luck with school, I hope it all goes well for you. Does your school help with placement or not? Mine gave us 10 or 12 apps the first week. Look on this forum under both good and bad companies, just remember what works for one may not work for another. If you have been reading on here you will notice there is alot of good advice given out by alot of folks, myself not inluded, I haven't been doing this long enough to give great advice. Just my observations. I do not think those two tickets are gonna hurt you with most companies mabey a select few, accidents that is another story. Keep us posted.
Phat Kat JW Thanks this.
