I finally found a driver who had driven one of these several years ago.

He says bottom clicker down for the first three holes and use the top ranger button splitter for splitting each hole if you need to or choose too. Then he says to go back to the one hole again and click the bottom clicker up for the top three shifts and they can be split also with the top clicker, high/low range. Clutch lightly every shift he says.

This is a pretty unique transmission and his after a couple of years started slipping out of or popping out of gear so he sold it.

He said $10,000 plus to fix the transmission from popping out of gear. He drove it several months that way though.

I'm trying to learn it perfect before I get in the truck next week.

I was going to use the bottom clicker to range with because I didn't understand this very unusual transmission.

Done right I guess it is a good transmission.

He never used the "C" or Crawler gear, it was too low for his pavement driving.

Mine has 264 rears, I think I might need it.

Do I click that range button before or after I get in the hole? The same with the splitter, please?

Yep, that would be the symptoms of worn out synchros.

When you say you can't "float" the gear shift. Does that mean you kind of stiff hand your shifts straight in the hole without kind of soft hand feeling it into gear like we like to do.

How about that third gear to the one hole again for the top six gears, how do you do that properly please.

No, float does not refer to the way you shove the stick into the hole. It's just the term most people use around here for making shifts without stepping on the clutch pedal. I probably should have used a different term.

But, yeah, with synchros you want to gently move the stick into all the gears like you would think because slaming the gearshift lever ("speed shifting") wears the synchros out faster.

I know about non-synchro/synchro transmissions, heavy truck and car types, I'm not the person to answer exactly how you shift that particular volvo transmission. Maybe you can ask one of the guys posting in this thread, there is a lot of Europeans posting who probably know exactly how you do it.

G'Day there Midwest.....have driven a few of them here in Australia, and yep spot on with the buttons mate -the bottom one is your "range change" from 3rd up to 4th, and the top one is the "splitter" for each gear. We'd just use 2nd and 3rd in Lo Range and just split the top half(4th, 5th and 6th), running single trailers (grossing 22 to 30 tons). If you were going B Double (anywhere from 42 to 62 tons), you'd split every gear.

"Gently Bently" when it comes to shifting/clutching, and you'll be fine. DEFINATELY no floating of the gears like a constant-mesh (RoadRanger), you'll probably find bits and pieces scattered along the road behind you !!!

I'm starting to understand this pretty good I think now. Thanks for the inputs.

"Clutch every shift", usually "gently", except for first gear and starting out when you will need to full "deep" clutch to get it into first gear and get going.

So I gently shift 1, 2, 3, with the clutch each shift and the splitter used only when needed or wanted or with a heavy load "every time", and clutched each and every time with each split or shift.

The six low gears used randomly according to the load and conditions.

That's about like all transmissions except you never shift or split any gear "without" the clutch and NEVER "double clutch".

Then bottom button(Range) "up" for top range and then split each of the 4, 5, 6, gears, again always clutching or "light clutching" every shift or split.

Reversing this procedure for downshifting and never, never, double clutching or "no clutch" "float shifting", or force shifting the lever, ever, never.

Soft and easy and with the clutch each shift and split.

Soft and gentle and constant and deliberately placed in each gear and split gently but all the way "in" each gear and split as needed.

"In the hole first" and then "clicked" up or down after getting in the hole, except when going from third to fourth in "range low'", then I'm thinking, "click the bottom range button "up" and then stick the clutch and shift from "three" back into the "one" hole for the "four" hole.

And then four, five, six, with splits or 8, 10, and 12.

"C" and it's "split" "up" being 1 and 2, or 13 and 14, however you want to say it.

When splitting, simply click to high or low and then gently clutch while momentarily letting off from the fuel throttle.

How about skipping gears and going from say the "three" hole to the "one" hole while braking and downshifting.

I know you can downshift without the splitter but can you skip gears for faster and quicker stops when necessary or wanted.

How about that compression "jake brake" on the engine.

Mine is constantly "on" and in the "low" position I think, and I'm thinking about removing the fuse so it never works rather than "always on" in my old million miles plus 1997 truck.

    It has the Volvo Engine.

I'm trying to get some miles out of my old $10,000 truck.

    Thanks for the help.
