What gives? There seems to be a number of re-occurring post here about trucking being a last resort type of job. I spend a little time each day researching different companies to work for. I even have a spread sheet made up to compare the companies. From what I can tell most of the starter companies have at least minimum requirements stating what they will and will not tolerate as far as your driving record and background. After spending over 35 years in and around the S.E. construction industry I can tell you that trucking companies are a lot more stringent in their hiring than most companies I worked for.
Bottom line is that most companies due to their insurance requirements can not afford to have someone with extensive baggage pushing a big rig down the road. This appears especially true for the starter companies. I would suggest to prospective truckers with background problems to do some research first. Most all of the starter companies have websites that list requirements. If you plan to attend a CDL school like myself make sure that you can get hired by someone first. The basic requirements are no different if you pay for your CDL or go through one of the trucking company schools.
I don’t know about the rest of you guys but personally I don’t want to running along side someone who had a major breakdown or failed a drug test a few months prior.

well let me ask you this...

how many people do you think are going to read your thread, but still ask if they will be hired or not..???

it's a given, that no one does any real research, as they want their answers NOW and NOT have to sift through everything else..

your posting is a GOOD ONE, but it'll get missed by nearly all that have such horrific backgrounds.

so you know what i will ultimately say..??

the hell with them, we can only do so much, let them find out for themselves, because for every 10 people saying NOT to get into the business, there will be about 4 that will say go for it....

That's the thing about CDL schools... There are plenty of stories from guys attending school and then finding out their background or past mistakes are holding them back from getting a job.

Theyre in business to make money.

In my experience, the company already did a background check before I attended their own school... Although technically not an employee while a student... I was officially hired the day the DMV issued my CDL... The rest of my training was as an paid employee.

I should clarify, I am not against CDL schools... I know a lot of good drivers that have attended them with no problems...

Just pointing out there are some schools that are less than honest about their ability at "job placement". Especially if the placement problem is with the students background.

"Less than honest" is a diplomatic way of putting it! The job of a driver mill school is to turn out drivers, not find them jobs. Thousands of graduated students are sitting around waiting for jobs. One good thing about a company school is that usually, the background stuff is already done before the student shows up to train... at least it is at our company school.

Then there are guys like me that wake up one morning, realized that I was broke, driving a 12 year old minivan, house in foreclosure, friendless, hadn't seen my family in 59 days, and ready to clean out my ears with a. 45 caliber hollow point q-tip.

That's when I decided it was time to get out of OTR trucking!!!

    Last resort job???

    Absolutely!!

To think the trucking industry is weeding out all the bad is funny. Wait until you get on the road and meet some of the lowlifes driving. These are people that wouldn't even get hired in the construction industry.

There are as many reasons for being in/out of trucking as there are drivers out there. You ask why the druggies keep asking; well, it's been my experience that druggies are among the most self-centered people in the world. They cannot concieve that nobody wants em around.

No, trucking is not the best paying job out there but it's always there in one form or the other. In the last 38 years I've spent very little time unemployed and I probably will stay employed until I just can't do it anymore. Alot of the high-dollar boys and girls are here because their "position" doesn't exist anymore and the unemployment is running out. Maybe they'll someday find the like again, maybe not.

No, I don't have much to show; but that's on me not the industry. But what I do have I earned and I'm content. I never expected to have any of it.

It's a hard business with little room for fools or whiners. It chews em up pretty fast. But if you make it you can look anybody straight in the eye.
