Hey can anyone tell me if there's socialization during your down time at truck stops and stuff? I'm interested in trying the driver thing, but not talking to anyone in person for weeks at a time would kill me.

Do you have regular guys you meet up with (not in a gay way haha) or get poker games together or whatever?

    Thanks,
    James

Plenty of opportunity to socialize, like truck stops, shippers/consignees, shops, terminals, over the CB radio, whatever.

If you're not shy, there's always someone to talk to...I had a great conversation with a hottie going down the road last night, started with a "now there's a happy seat!" as I passed her! :biggrin_25522:

Every time I'm in the truck stop there are truckers sittin' around complaining about idiot 4-wheelers and how bad their job sucks, or how the gov't is getting to involved with trucking...

I just enjoy the funny things I hear and join in when sitting there for a restart. Other than that I don't because that conversation is never ending.

I have friends that I see fairly often out here....It takes a little time to develop friendships out here but it's possible.
One of the ways that I have met people oveer the years is when I'm layed over somewhere I bust out the grille and start cookin', Pretty soon someone will wander over and ask if they can toss something on the grille and sometimes in an hour or two there will be a few guys sittin' around BS'n and havin' a good time.

It wasn't really a stupid question...

My fiance hates the way I can talk to anyone (even a total stranger) about anything for hours at a time whenever we go anywhere. She just wants to get out of there & go home.

I've tried explaining to her that I spend most of my time alone in the truck with the dog by my side...and he ain't much for conversation. SOMETIMES, I am lucky enough to have an intelligent conversation over the CB while going down the road....but those are few and far between. If I'm on the big road (yuck), it's hard to get very far before you have someone deadkeying their mic, whispering about how they ain't got no panties on, yelling "shut up stupid", or any number of other ignorant things trying to break up what WAS a decent conversation. If I'm on the little roads, other trucks are few & far between and when I DO see one, a lot of them aren't running their radio.

She works retail...at the customer service desk, no less....and deals with more than enough people on a daily basis...so she just wants to go home.

I have had some decent conversations, though....mostly with non-truckers. I stayed at a motel a few weeks ago, and when I pulled into the parking lot, there wasn't as much room as I had thought...so I backed back out onto the road, turned around, and backed in off the road...around a little S-curve, and parked the truck. When I walked in to check in, the people sitting on the bench by the front door complimented me on my driving and how I was able to get the truck to go where I wanted it...and we got to talking. An hour or so later, I finally got around to checking in.:biggrin_2559:

Actually I have found it is too easy to socialize and BS at truckstops. Be careful or you could wind up blowing an hour or more of valuable time swapping stories, and some guys won't shut up lol. Some times I just gotta say I got a hot load and gotta leave just to get away. I enjoy talking too much and gotta avoid the trap lol.
