Yes,of course they do...It is ironic though...is it not? I do not know if this story is true or not, however,in my home area,I have a friend of a friend of a friend,(that kinda deal) who says he knows this ol boy who lives 45 miles from me,who,in 1967,blew off his little finger and the one next to it to escape the draft,as it was certain he would be going to Vietnam....No right or wrong answer to this, but I have always felt he was still qualified to go.. I met him one time 15 years ago,and the fingers were not there, and when I asked him about this,he would not respond.

hmmmmmmmmm....
Crossing the border may have been less painful. -
There is no telling how many draftee's fled across the northern border into Canada. I have wondered if some of the drivers who come across to the lower 48 were among those who left the country during that time.
123456 Thanks this. -

My number was 287...but I enlisted in the Army in 1973...ended up staying 11 years.

Had a guy in my neighborhood, the nerdy type, wanted to enlist into the Army right out of high school as he was a computer nerd and the military had some of most advanced computers back in the late 60's. He was denied due to his eyesight. A year or two later he got drafted and ended up being a ground pounder in the Army. H enever did get a good answer why his sight kept him out of an office job, but was good enough to shoot a rifle.
Bumpy Thanks this. -
Your girlfriends ex-husbands brother's cousin's former roommate kind of deal.

I remember draft dodgers and their tricks. I had a neighbor who was disqualified because he was flat footed.
They started the Selective Service around 1977 or so?? You couldn't get your drivers license until you showed proof you signed up.
It wasn't 6-7 years ago I worked with a guy that was in the NG. He got called to active duty. He faked a back injury so he couldn't go. They ended up kicking him out. I told him to his face he was a coward. He didn't like that too much.
I went in 1979 as a 24H (Improved Hawk Fire Missile Control Repairman). The computer and power supplies were about as big as a house trailer. It was loaded with vacuum tubes. Transistors and IC chips were cutting technology. My desktop now is more powerful ,lol. I'd like to see the system now. -
Ah yes,and there is that point to consider. Now with all of our involvement in the Middle East,National Guard units are being deployed all the time there,in fact, the one in my hometown is currently on tour number 2. Although they are on a support basis there,I too, have heard stories of NG members planning to not go;WHAT.....? They sign up with the idea of gaining benefits of some kind (whatever their reasons) and when it is time to pay the piper, they want out.? Of course, the majority "do their duty" still,I cannot understand some people's selfishness, laziness, and yes,cowardice..

It is about what the military needed at the time. I remember when I first went for my physical they inducted a group right into the Marine Corps. Things were pretty hot in Vietnam.
