When at the edge of a 4G area, the radio does freak out a bit. I have found out that turning the 4G off helps for that instance, but that probably only works with a phone and not a modem device.
One thing to note is that you better have unlimited data. I have burned up almost 2gigs streaming a movie on Hulu at 480p.

I have a 4g novatel mifi and data works just fine with it plugged in and charging.

I would imagine that there would be a way to disable the 4G radio if you are on the outskirts of the 4G area. I can do this on my Thunderbolt and it also saves a ton on battery usage

No, it's actually the other way around. Verizon's 4G LTE is on 700MHz, which should offer better building penetration than their 3G EVDO/2G 1xRTT network on 850MHz or 1900MHz depending on area. Lower frequencies offer better building penetration while higher frequencies can offer higher throughput all other things being equal.
I don't know how much interference there is on the 700MHz band. It probably doesn't have a lot since it's part of the old analog TV band. It certainly isn't as bad as 2.4GHz where everybody, their uncle, his dog, and their pet gopher broadcast everything.
Of course this is all just book knowledge. None of my handsets are cool enough to actually use 4G LTE, nor do I live anywhere with it. -
not to split hairs with you but 700MHz vs 850MHz as far as building penetration is negligible. When we start being able to use some of the VHF then we will talk about penetration and coverage.
