I have been driving for just over a year now. i started with schneider on a walmart account (horrible pay) and then in jan, went over to a local company. After sorting though all of these threads, im curious is there really such thing as a good trucking company that pays well and does what it says its going to do?? lI dont ask for much, more then 30 cents a mile, home on the weekends and maybe a few days through the week (not necessary) and to run midwest and south. Anyone know of anything like that out there?

Your choices will boil down to money or home time. You have to choose.
You surely don't expect exceptional pay and home every weekend or even more often. Since jobs like this make a small percentage of the total jobs, how many do you think a driver with a year of experience is going to get?
With all due respect, it's about moving freight to make the company money. Do it well enough and you make money too.
No disrespect intended but where are your realistic expectations? Did you research before you started and enter with realistic expectatons? Or are you just now researching and finding the answers aren't what you wanted to hear?
Time will get you where you want to be. One year does not equal time. Job-hopping will kill your opportunities. -
theres a ups freight terminal in effingham
in a year and a half we'll be at 66 cpm for linehaul and 26.15 for local -
Maverick,

there are many different types of driving jobs out there. i work 6 months and stay home 6 months. my work pays enough to do that. i don't have the love for driving anymore it's just a job but has bennies, retirement and outstanding wages. it's all about the money to me. it's your choice good luck.

What was your weekly pay for the Schnieder dedicated account and how much home time did you get?
-
Focus on ltl carriers for that type of work schedule. Union or non union will offer better pay, benefits, and home time than the larger truckload carriers. Examples off the top of my head are;
YRC, ABF, Old Dominion, Sai, R&L, Fed Ex, Ups, Pitt Ohio, etc.
The key is to get your foot in the door and work your way up the ladder. -
I'm with a small (125 trucks) company in IL. I was a recent driving school grad and started with them 2 months ago. 36cpm (300+ mile trip) (48cpm < 300miles). I am in an 09 KW t660, get 2600+ miles per week and am home every weekend, and most times I get home one night during the week. Look beyond the obvious mega carriers and there are some good companies out there that don't advertise. Look in the phone books for your area. Also take a look at the trucks you see driving in your area. Keep a pad and paper with you at all times and write down names and get out to see them in person.

Depending on where you live, but look into Fed EX line haul, you can go either team or solo, team does pay better and your home most weekends.

You can go on their website and see what is available in your area.
The problem is the pay isn't great (more for OTR) and the miles are low. Seems to me the ones I looked at were 2000 miles at .32 or about $640 a week. Home every weekend and many other days.
Since I can make that much doing HVAC service work, be home every day and on call once every three weeks it doesn't interest me. I want the big bucks that only come with running miles.
Based on my research and experience, it's simple. Do you want miles or home time? Miles equal money.
My apologies if my post late last night was too harsh. I started trucking in 1979. I knew I was giving up my home time for money. In those days two monthes out was nothing.
It's better today and many companies are going toward a more regional approach but miles suffer. Still if you entered the trucking industry expecting lots of home time and lots of money, IMHO you failed to research and develop realistic goals.123456 Thanks this.
