I have a question. I never lived in Missouri nor have I ever had a CDL out of that state. I got a letter from that state saying I owed them $17,000.00 in back state taxes. Since when did we start paying state taxes in a state I never lived in?? How would one resolve this issue? I was thinking that I don't live in that state they couldn't do anything to me. Is this true?

Were you employed by a Missouri comapany?

I have never resided in Mississippi, but for the 3 years I was employed by a Mississippi company.... Not only were MS income taxes withdrawn from my pay.... But Georgia & Federal as well.

When filing MS taxes, I would only recieve back 50% of what was paid to them.

The letter should have a reason on it.

Second, you could review what a missouri non resident return would do for you in that situation.

Third, I think they are nuts because I have done returns for a few drivers who are running for missouri companies.

I think if you were to review your w-2, you might find that it shows you with state wages in missouri.

A correct w-2 may be all that is needed.

Yes Redd I was leased to Prime Inc in springfield.
Roadmedic,All it said on the heading was that I failed to file state income tax for Missouri. And that was from the year of 2006. And I had a CPA do my taxes every year. And I used my address in Texas. He told me before that I am not obligated to pay state income tax in Missouri if I am living in Texas, especially I was considered self employed. I was told there was nothing they could really do to me as long as I dont live there and My CDL is in Texas and not Missouri.

    So this was not a w-2, but a 1099.

Your CPA is correct on the not owing the money.

But I have concerns about what they can do. Your problem does need addressed and resolved.

Were you able to resolve your issue with Missouri? I'm in the same boat and confused on what to do.

I live in Texas and in 2004 I became a lease operator for Prime. I worked from March 2004 to October 2004. I left the company due to no home time and no pay. I could never break even. My question is that today, 07/09/2011, I received a letter from the Missouri Department of Revenue stating that I was deficient on taxes in 2004. I filed my taxes in Texas, where I live and I'm curious why Missouri is now wanting money from me. Has this happen to anyone else? Any suggestions on what to do? It has been 7 years and I'm very stressed over the situation.

I've never received a letter or anything but a couple years ago a company I worked for based out of Colorado put on my taxes that I was in Co (I never set tire in Co the entire time I worked there.) That's how this happens. They are supposed to put where you live on the tax form, not where they are based.

I'd say you should let them know that the company screwed up, you never lived in that state, and they have no claim. Better to do it now then after they steal a chunk of your next federal return.

More than most people. Certainly enough to get their attention if they had a valid claim to any of it.
