gravdigr just like mattp mentioned it is something that will never forget you. I too served on my local ambulance service and the worst for me was holding a 2 year old child in my arms. You deal with it most days and keep telling yourself that everyday is a good day...try missing one and see what happens....

Finally got the cursed load to orlando...a day and a half late lol. Now some downtime as we can't pick up our next load until after midnight and delivery is at 3am monday.

I got a lot of city driving done now and am getting very comfortable with it. Finally got to do some more backing. I came to the comclusion fed ex drivers are....."special". Not only did they park some trailers right in the way of the only empty trailer available to us, but they parked the trailer on each side close to the line AND the trailer on the one side was forward a good 10' father than it should've been. It made for a very difficult pull out. Phil had to do it while I spotted and it was very close. Maybe a few millimeters between the trailer corners but he cleared it.

I'm now doing all the paperwork and trip planning as if I was driving solo. Phil says I'm coming along well so hopefully I will be done on the shorter side of 4 weeks.

Keep doing this job long enough and you're bound to have more than a few "close calls". I've lost count myself...things like getting held up loading/unloading/fueling/etc. only to be further delayed by traffic that is backed up from a wreck that happened right when you WOULD have been driving through....or things running exceptionally smooth during the loading/uloading/fueling/etc. and then seeing the emergency vehicles speeding to the scene of a crash that happened right after you passed through....to the wreck you watch on the big road after you exited off to go around a backup that the truck behind you didn't take the exit and didn't stop...to the 4-wheeler who was too impatient to wait for you to move over after passing another truck so they squeeze through the narrow space between your ICC bumper and the other truck's front bumper only to end up on their lid in the median 20 miles up the road....

All you can control is your own actions....drive defensively and know what is going on around your vehicle at all times. Also, keep your log book up to date and legal, don't run over-hours, etc....make sure YOU are doing everything you are supposed to be doing and your ducks are in a row...in other words, CYA. Beyond that, there really isn't much you can do. $#!t happens.

I miss his posts too. I can't imagine with his attitude and realistic expectations that he's hit anything he can't overcome.

Sorry folks. Everything is going very well. Been busy. I'm happy to report that my trainer scheduled my orientation for thursday. It could have been sooner but he is required to keep me for at least 3 weeks.

I turned 658 miles yesterday which is pretty #### good in a 65mph governed truck. I'm learning night dispatch is worthless and hates us. We had a sweet load from jersey to Louisiana. While I'm sleeping night dispatch calls and 300 mi in tells us to t-call our load and repower a late load back to MD. So we do that with assurances from dispatch we will get a good load in return for the favor. Our good load turns out to be an 800 mi appointment only load not due for 3 days. Thanks a friggin lot. So we take that load most of the way and request to t-call it since we will be 2 days early for the appointment. They tell us to drop it in Willard, OH of all places. We drop it there and wind up waiting 24 hours for another load. In that time we get the apu fixed, then find out the apu isn't really fixed. Finally Phils normal dispatcher comes back to work from sick leave and we get a nice 1,600 mi load to laredo, TX. But then partway down we get a message to t-call this one in Irving, TX. We lose about 400mi but figure they have a load preplanned out of here for us. We dropped our trailer about 5 hours ago and are still waiting for a message from dispatch.

But anyway, I was excited when Phil said I was ready for orientation. I started this morning and noticed I feel more like a driver and less like a steering wheel holder. Everything is coming natural now without me having to think about every aspect of driving. I'm hoping I'll be finished with orientation and get my truck friday so I can go home rather than have to sit at a hotel all weekend. A guy I graduated school with got upgraded from the same yard I will be and he got a brand new 10spd dd15 cascadia so I'm holding out hope I won't get stuck with a 600k mile automatic POS.

BTW here is the news article from that accident I was at. There is some footage of the van and the truck that burned. It looks like a lot of the truck is still there but once they push it off the road the bulk of it crumbles and disintegrates.

Glad you are still doing ok, gotta luv night dispatch. Hopefully you wont get an Auto, had one not to long ago for a loner, not bad in a traffic jam. i here ya about things being fixed and then they are not. My truck was in a couple of weeks ago for some PM follow ups amd to fix the AC, 5 days later I pick it up, 1 day later I am dead , wont start turns over barely. Fastforword 2 hrs wrecker gets there, he jumps it pops the hood and precedes to say well looks like you have new AC lines but the clutch is shot dont know how they missed that and I bet when they worked on the compessor to the AC they probably did not add enough oil back in so the batteries are not being charged enough. I drive in Chicago and alot of places you can not idle more than 5 minutes, especially on lower wacker drive, I have a lift gate which if I am not ideling I should only raise and lower 3 or 4 times with out starting up. Luckily I was not in the city that day double parked or backed into an alley when this happened. Got truck back everything seems fine. You do your job the best you can I guess it is to much for others I guess. Keep us posted and good luck.
