Yeah, they're making progress. I drove by the middle of last week, and the old facilities are gone. The fuel island was mostly in place and the main building was starting to take shape.

I actually like Wilco. We don't fuel there, but the restrooms are spacious enough, the parking lots are roomy, and most have Dunkin' Donuts coffee!

Might as well get used to it. A few more years and there will be no more independents. These big box stops have so many companies tied in with corporate deals and service contracts the regular good stops just cant compete anymore and the big ones are buying them out. I honestly dont mind TA/Petro getting their hands on some but Pilot buys out so many good stops and rips the resturants out and does their usual pilot thing and ruins a good place. Getting kind of boring out here now.

Sounds like TA/Petro is trying to keep up with Pilot/Flying J///at least in the number of locations.

Steel City in Gary, across for Loves (formerly Flying J) will be a Petro. So long free showers, etc., I spoke with the manager a few weeks ago and he said construction on the new building should begin in August or September. They plan on putting in a garage, too. He said they won't be changing the parking lot. We shall see. It is a shame most of the independents are being bought out by the chains. If Steel City is changing, at least it will be a Petro rather than another Pilot.

As soon as I saw this post all I could think was the same as gman. Bye bye free showers, and pretty darn good food at several of them.

Last I checked everybody gives you a free shower with 50 gallons of fuel. If you think you deserve one without it then you need a reality check. They are in business to make money not give free showers to people who don't do business with them.

Nope its directly across the street from that Loves and will be changing to a TA. They have the land for the loves graded, Its going to be at least 1/3 larger than the Steel City lot.

One thing I will sat about Loves. At least that company is actually building new truck parking facilities rather than just slapping a new name on old ones. Only company out there that I see doing that. More parking spots is never a bad thing.

I don't think that anyone thinks they deserve a free shower. Many of the older independents would give anyone a shower whether they bought fuel or not. It was good pr for the truck stop. Most of them had restaurants and other services. It helped build good will and ultimately helped to build their business. We also used to get a free cup of coffee or soft drink. Many independents would fuel your truck, park it for you and then bring your keys to you. And they would wash your windshield and check other things. These old independents offered real customer service.
