starting in 1st or 2nd i think depends more on the rear end gears, i drive a 10 speed Eaton fuller with a Cummings, concentrate on smooth action of the fuel pedal and don't let the pedal all the way up. lift the throttle till it slides out of gear and a very slight adjustment in the pedal for it to slide into the next gear up or down, if your letting your foot all the way off the pedal it will be jerky.

Give the truck a little gas before you let off the clutch... wen you disengage the clutch to shift your transmission is moving faster than your engine thats what causes the jerking . Its just like in a manual 4 wheeler However if you give it to much gas your engine is moving faster than your transmission and it will cause jerking still... its a sweet spot kinda deal.

Im sorry but I have to be the jerky"that guy" for a minute. I see this on this site and Class A so much and it drives me crazy. How can you claim to know anything about your drive train when you are still refering to it as CUMMINGS!!!!!!!!! there is no G. Its Cummins drivers,Its Cummins. If you are gonna know anything at all about your job and truck at least know whats under the hood. Very hard to take anything serious when you call it a Cummings. You might be mechanical genius but if you cant get the name right no one will take you completely serious. CUMMINS!!!!! thats not just directed at the poster i quoted. thats for several others on this whole message board!

Sounds like lazy driver. Unless you have 400 + rears and you are maxed out you should use at least 2nd. Cluthch changers love those that think they can just take off in any gear. Some one mentioned motor mounts. They too will shake the Hell out of you if broken and taking off heavy.

Hup, you shouldn't have any load too heavy to start in 2nd unless you are going uphill. Start letting the clutch out, then give just a little bit of fuel to smooth out the jerkiness. Definitely make sure the jake is off; that's one of my biggest trials in lower gears.

This is all stuff Joe tells ME all the time, as I have the same issues. I'm hoping it just comes with practice.

N14 Cummins, Super 10, 3.70 rears, loaded (89500lbs) I alway start out in first gear. Empty I start out in second gear. Bobtail I'll start out in third sometimes. I never double clutch, float only. I haul cattle and need to be smooth. I get out run all the time leaving a light but you don't hear cattle sliding all over in my trailer either. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Go slow and get smooth first. That said I would rather have a 13 or 18 speed because I have around 500rpm drops between gears and it is hard to hit the hole and stay smooth all the time on hills.

I only use 1st going up hill.. i dont like starting out in 1st off an incline because I do shake the hell out of the truck when doing so... the highest I'll start off in is 3rd and thets only when draggin and empty or bobin.

News flash !!!! Why do you think they put 1st and 2nd gears in trucks ? I have a 13 speed, and even when Im empty I ALWAYS START OF IN "1st" GEAR !!!..... WOW, :biggrin_2554: I can't believe what Im reading, you driver's(steering wheel holder's) taking of in 3rd and even 4th gear.. Now I know why my clutches last me "10 years" and I drive locally. I know Im doing something right !!!
