Its always worked for me so far.. i dont mean give it a ton of gas just a little tinge to keep the clutch transmission and engine in balance with one another. If you jerk the hell out of the truck your going to be in for motor mount damage and more over time. Theres nothing wrong with starting off in 2nd gear. Third is a bit iffy depending on how you treat it. I've had to replace a couple transmission's and clutches in mack's because of this but 2nd gear wont hurt anything unless your really heavy. Hell bobtailed I wouldent wana touch anything near 1st or 2nd. 1 because it can cause damage if your rough with it and 2nd since your not under a load your not doing any harm to the truck in doing so.

I'm sorry, but- "Jerking while shifting"?

Personally, I've never been able to do both at the same time.....

IMSAKid: It's fuel, hon, not gas.

Diesel Dave: 1st gear is to provide more torque for heavier gears going up hills. It is not truly necessary to start out in 1st under most situations and it will not damage the transmission. Admittedly, I am still fairly new, but I did do a few searches to see if I could find anything to verify that starting out of first damages the transmission and many sites advised NOT starting in first except for heavy loads. But if you do have references of some sort to show me that I should be starting in first, could you please post them? I can always use the help.

    Thanks!:biggrin_25519:

When Im reffering to 1st gear I mean 1st gear NOT "LOW" gear. Someone on here said that they read if you use first gear is damages the transmission:biggrin_2554:. Im losing my patients on this thread. I can't believe what im hearing/reading here. I'll just lay back and "read the mail"(C.B. talk), a get more good laugh's out of this.:laughing3:

That's the way I've always done it, too. Start a loaded truck off in the lowest gear available. That means I run through all five in deep reduction with a 15. It seems that people who have to do their own clutch work and pay for their own clutches do things differently.
