Hmm, I'm in a 13 speed and have never really even used first gear. I used second when stuck in crawling traffic in DC. My trainer would give me hell for pulling out in anything under 3rd gear unless it was a steep hill.
I used to have trouble with the truck jerking around thing when shifting in the bottom 5 gears then I read something that really smoothed my shifting out....progressive shifting. Unless going up a steep grade you don't have to rev the motor to 1,500-1,700rpm then shift. The motor makes plenty of torque in the 1,000-1,500 range for the lower gears. I'm finding I can pull out in 3rd, shift to 4th at about 1,150, 5th at 1,250, 6th at 1,350, 7th, 8th, and 9th at around 1,450, and for 10th I'll go 1,500-1,700 depending on if I'm going up a grade. I started shifting this way and every shift has been butter with no grinding or jerking :snicker:

Alright let me try explain better.. Basically, I have 2 issues. The first is when starting from a stop, and the other is during upshifting from 3->4->5.
- truck: 2007 volvo, cummins, 10 spd, eatun fuller. I don't know the gear ratios...
- I often haul 45-48k loads on a flatbed.. if that matters.
- oh, and no.. the jake is definitely off..
Problem 1: starting from a stop, heavy:
While heavy, I *can* start from a stop in 1st, 2nd, 3rd.. But if I start in 3rd, the truck will hop up and down a bit. You can tell this is a strain on the truck.. and I was told that when the truck does this from a start.. it means you are straining the clutch too much and will wear it out prematurely. And so.. I should start in a lower gear.
That said.. I now regularly start in 2nd. But the truck STILL hops a little while my foot is on the clutch pedal.. once my foot is off, the truck settles down and moves along at its nice snails pace. I can then upshift to third pretty easily.
(starting from a stop empty, I can start off in 3rd, and its the same as when I start in 2nd..)
Problem 2: upshifting through low gears
This problem is I think.. me. I don't know if I shift when the RPMs are too high, or to low.. or what. What happens is that AFTER I upshift to the next higher gear, and give it fuel, the truck will.. hop or wobble. Basically, I know I'm not matching something right. but I'm not sure what it is.. or how to fix it. I see lots of trucks doing this.. so I know its not just me. But then some others.. are smooth, you can barely tell they're going through the gears at all. I want to be Mr Smooth like the cattle transporting fellow (sorry, forgot your username atm...).
I was told I'm giving too much fuel, but.. i feel like I'm not giving it much at all. I'm not mashing the throttle down after completing the upshift. just some light pressure.
As I upshift the problem becomes less pronounced.. so, by the time I'm at 5th or 6th, the hop or wobble is mostly gone. -

I have a feeling you're right about the fuel pedal.. and particularly about not letting it up all the way. I haven't tried that but sometimes I feel like that's what needs to be done. I'll give it some experimenting this week. -
GAS in a diesel....drives me nuts!!!!! -
You're right Trilleth, and I can start out in 2nd, even 3rd. But I wobble while letting the clutch pedal up. Maybe I should let it up faster?
ya jake is off.. generally, when starting from a stop I'm in a populated area, and I don't use the jake "in public", so to speak -
let the clutch out, without giving it any fuel........
