We may be talking about the same thing. Dave has said he did not mean low, which on a 10 speed could be taken as 1st (same hole as 6th) since on the shifting diagram it says that position is after all 1st gear.
Trilleth Thanks this. -
Start out from a stop in 2-3 under any load? I don't know about that. Been driving less than a year so I am by far no grizzley old pro, buy I was taught buy some grizzley old pro's. When stating from a stop start at 1st let clutch out till you feel it grab, then do what I call feather the brake and clutch, no throttle needed, continue to work thru gears. Could it be OP is going to deep into the clutch or dumping it? Is it any wonder so many have a hard time these days no one wants to listen to the guys that IMHO give out the best advice. Big John, Diesel Dave, you guys are top notch IMO. Please don't stop posting what you guys have learned over a long period of time. Peace
SL3406, Diesel Dave and BigJohn54 Thank this. -
One of the things that may get us ole hands, I know it does me, is that the lowest gear was always known as the granny hole. For me this goes back to the timber and the hayfields. Back when we bucked small square bales for 2 cents each.
The granny hole is what I used to start when over 100,000 pounds.bullhaulerswife, Trilleth, Diesel Dave and 1 other person Thank this. -

No, some construction outfit use it for their yard now....and to teach newbies how to operate heavy equipment.Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
I'm only going by what i know having worked on trucks in a past job. I've done everything from oil changes to clutch jobs and was taught how to drive a semi at the age of 17. Hell If I need to i can even get a truck going in 6th gear (bit of advice dont screw up your low range setting) I had to get the truck from oneend of a huge yard to another.. took a lot of feathering the gas and clutch together but i did it. I stunned the hell out of my instructor when I accidentley (not paying attention to the fact i was in high range) got the truck moving from a dead stop in 6th gear as a student...
In diesel Daves defense It also does have a lot to do with the transmission.. the majority of rigs I've worked on and driven had the Eaton 10 speed in them, If you take off from a dead stop in 1st gear on flat land your gona have headach's all day from your head bobin around. Him having a 13 speed they do take off a little more smoothly in its lower gears if you know what your doing with them. Seeing how a lot of flat bed company's use the 13 speed (and I've only driven one with a 13) it does go a lot smoother in its lower gears... The 10 speed I'm driving now 2nd gear takes off just as well as 1st with no clutch chatter or anything of that sort its just a much taller gear. Now 3rd gear i do hear a lot of clutch chatter if I'm under a load. but bob tailing as i said I wouldent go under 3rd. -
As most have said, I believe it to be a practice thing. You will smooth out with more experience.
In my case, I get the "hop" when in reverse. I think it's because my low reverse is too high of a gear. I would be happy if it was the same size gear as "1st" ...or Granny-gear...you know...the one all the way to the left and pull back, directly behind reverse. That really is "1st" and I use it only when tug-testing or setting my tandem. Well, sometimes when it looks like I might be gonna get stuck in mud or snow. My "2nd" (push the stick forward in the middle -don't go there, Otter-) is 3mph at idle. Chicken-Coop speed. I start there when loaded over about 20K. Under 20K and with a trailer starts in "3rd" (pull the stick back toward yourself in the middle -just let it go, friend-) Bobtail, I start in 4th (forward and all the way right.)
I included stick position (I'm tellin ya...it's not worth it) so that we all know what gear I'm talking about.hup Thanks this.
