I just bought an Old Peterbilt Cabover that I plan to convert into a pick-up truck or RV. My question is whether my driving of the tractor only from the West Coast to the East Coast (where it will be converted) is subject to rules regs etc. of the FMCSA during the trip? I have a CDL Class B with Air Brake Endorsement and am not a professional driver. I obtained my CDL B solely for this purpose.Thanks.

I believe it has to be an A for that size truck, anything over 26,001lbs. I have seen old trucks converted to RV's. As for all the paperwork needed to be done I have no idea. I just see them on the road with, "RV USE ONLY" or something to that effect on the side.

Yes you would be subject to all the rules pertaining to a class 8 tractor whether or not you have a trailer behind you or are bobtailing. If you only have a class B license, you can be fined big time as you would not have the required license. That tractor is still classified as a class 8 truck, until you convert it to whatever you want to then have it re-registered as either a motor-home, camper, pick-up whatever.

Thanks. Ive confirmed that a Class B allows me to drive a tractor - think of it as a three axle dump truck etc.

Can you tell us where you got that information? Because a class B CDL is specific to a class B truck, which in NO WAY a tractor is, and NO, I will not think of it as a 3 axle dump truck, which by the way, is a class B truck. If you were to have had a class A CDL, then you could drive anything under that class, ( for instance, B, C), with the exception of passenger if you don't have that endoresment.

A tractor IS NOT a straight truck. Hey, good luck to you.

Sorry , I do not rely on a school's website. I prefer to rely on the regs. In fact, the drivers manual in NY issued by the DMV explicity includes solo tractors.
