Avoid ACERT?

    I know several people who great lengths to avoid EGR bt either using older equipment, or trying to delete or disable the system. Is any of that necessary for Cats? The reading I have done here so far doesn't indicate a fear of or hatred for ACERT engines. I would rather have a newer truck if the fuel mileage can be just as good. Thanks.

    First off the ACERT isn't EGR. But there shouldn't be any fear of the ACERT or other EGR motors if the proper tuning and parts are applied. Even though the Cummins ISX does have head cracking issues they can still be built to decent motors. Just like the ACERT can be built to run like a beast with only about $4000 and still retain the emissions equipment that a few "high performace shops" are claiming as major problems. I am thinking already about replacing my current tractor in a couple of years with a glider kit that will have either a CAT 6NZ or ACERT (MXS or NXS). The engine choice all depends on the goverment stance at the time.

    If it's a newer Cat with a DPF then yes I would delete that as well. If it's an older Acert without a DPF then no they are relatively issue free (no regen, no VGT, no EGR) and run extremely well with an aftermarket ECM tune.

    Given a choice between an ISX and an BXS or MXS Acert I'd take the Acert hands down even if I had to do the DPF delete on the Cat.

    I have heard that from "certain 'high performance shops'" and thus my question. I have more experience with Detroit engines than any other, mostly as a company driver, but I had a DDEC V in the one truck I owned. Fear (or reluctance) is generally a product of ignorance. I am trying to rectify that by learning more about Caterpillar engines. (BTW, I do know that ACERTs don't use EGR valves, and that the technology is totally different.)

    Better order it now, it's currently a 13 month wait for a new Pete glider. (ask me how I know!:biggrin_2559:) And last Christmas Hoovers in Dover, OH didn't have many trucks lined up to do but as of last Memorial day he's got something like 30 Pete gliders to build. Too bad KW is too stupid to offer one. I know 2 guys here locally that picked their shiny new 2011 Pete's with non EPA Cats under the hood about a month ago. Just think, a shiny new truck without all the headaches and downtime. (not cheap though, one was $137k with an Ohio Cat overhauled 70pin E model)

    i have a 06 acert and after ecm and manifold mod and a few other little inexpensive mods its a great running motor. dont be afraid of an acert.

    A Pete would be my second choice since the stealerships around here suck even when I try to get parts. I was leaning towards a Western Star LowMax, but I don't even know if they offer a glider kit. To be honest, I'm about 2-3 years away from seriously considering a newer ride.

    I'd run from an ACERT my father inlaw has one and a family friend has one they are junk unless you like working on them all the time. We have an 06 spec ISX with egr bypassed and the truck is awesome. When did KW stop offering gliders we used to buy them when running oilfield trucks?

    800,240 on a 06 W9 with a 475 Acert. I've had no issues at all with the Acert. One tough engine.:biggrin_25523:
