about 5 or 6 % and like 18 miles(it is an off and on descent though). The problem is two-fold. First, at the bottom of the hill is Salt Lake City. Second, due to it's proximity to SLC and also the fact that Park City,UT(huge resort area and site of winter olympics) is at the top of the hill, the amount of four wheeler traffic is horrendous.
I always go I84 through Weber Canyon to US89 south to I15. If you are staying on I80 west, this route is only 10 miles further and is faster due to not having to deal with Parley's.

As for going through Provo Canyon to bypass SLC on southside; I have done that as well but has been many years.(and yes I had a 48' reefer at the time) -
If one is going west, he can go the way Eskimo is talking about--go I-84 from Echo Junction, through Weber Canyon, and into Ogden. From there he can get on US 89 south if he's heading to Salt Lake City, Reno, or Vegas way. If he's going east he can do the same thing in reverse--I-15 to US 89 to I-84. Weber Canyon eliminates Parley's, the I-80 mountain grade that descends down into Salt Lake City from the east.
One can also continue on I-84 to I-15 south beyond Hill AFB and avoid 89. Going this way adds a mile or two, but US 89 is a highway in a metro area, meaning you will hit stoplights if you go this way. US 89 south hits I-15 around the Lagoon Park area, and I forget the name of the town that that is in.
I always took I-15 to I-84 and avoided the mountain grade of Parley's altogether. I-84 is easier on equipment both coming and going. -
To go through I84 and back to SLC, you a over 20 miles to your route (according to Google Maps). I have never known this detour to be faster in any way and traffic is only bad going over Parley's in the winter on Sunday late afternoons with ski traffic (similar to going over the big hill on I70 into Denver). -

Both of you are right, it just depends on where you're going when you hit Echo Junction west bound. If you're going to Reno, I think the Weber Canyon route is closer. If you're going to Vegas/LA, I think I-80 to I-215 (on the bench) to I-15 is a tad closer. But not by much.

I use to run Provo Canyon before they closed it to 53's. Too bad. I had no problem.
Yes, 89 connects when you hit the valley and drops down to I-15 South above Bountiful. I won't go that way if I am heading south. Too far out of route. I just run through Park City and down the hill. Coming into Ogden from I-84 and then going south, you have added about 80 miles to your trip.
At the bottom of Parley's, you pick up I 215 now and it drops you onto I-15 south at the 300 Mile Sticker. My stop was just south of Provo on that route. (Springville). Memories coming back now. Amazing
