They are just stating some of the bad things that have/are/will happen. Not every carrier is perfect. Don't let this alter your decision because this can happen at many carriers.

Part of this isn't just Roehl, it's trucking. It's frustrating to be twenty miles from home and out of hours, but that's not Roehl that's federal hours of service regulations. Not letting me take a twenty mile detour to get home for the night is a f.m. not looking out for his driver, that will also be true with any company, not just Roehl.

I have my issues with Roehl, but if you want a company that will teach you how to drive safe and legal then Roehl is a good choice. If you want a company that won't just hand you the keys to a truck and say, "There you go, good luck." Then Roehl is a good choice. I try to be fair, I won't defend Roehl when they are wrong, but I won't try to blame them for things that are just life or trucking. I started with Star out of Morton IL. I was given a truck with very poor training and we were even told never to call dispatch, because they were busy. We were to use the quallcom and then wait till they got around to replying to our problem. Roehl has a policy that you use the q'comm for routine and non-urgent issues. If your issue is more complicated or urgent call in.

Folks I do understand that we do not live in a perfect world and not everything in trucking will always go the way we want it too. We/I have to take the good with the bad. I will be done with my 5 weeks of school and have my CDL in the next 10 days, so i am trying to find a good place to go. I am sure I said it here some where, I am not a job hopper, so where I do land I would like to stay there.

Roehl is offering .30 a mile

They probably wouldn't notice that or wouldn't care if you would have just done it. In a case like this it is probably better to ask forgiveness than permission. They can't tell you no if you don't ask.

I miss the good old days, unplug the q-com power supply, and put it in the wind... Catch up the log book the next day... That is pretty tough with with e-logs. I guess that is why we have e-logs... Back to reality, you just need to use your head, if you end up 20 miles from home, call the wife, have her come out and meet you, have diner out, finish your break, then drive the truck home, no harm, no foul. My wife and kids have driven over an hour to meet me down on I-80 or in Erie, if I was comming through. This job is what you make it, you do have alot of control over how "you" deal with a situation. Yes there are alot of days that trucking sucks, but the next day seeing the sun rise in the desert southwest over the bluffs, well, you get the idea. If you are going to do this make a commitment to give it a full year. If something the company does doesen't seem right call them on it. There is alot to be said for communication, and it is a two way process. I love to drive truck, I hate to put up with trucking companies...

Some of the best advice I ever received was to make decisions based on the climate, not the weather. Weather changes from day to day, climate is how things are long term. The climate that I have found at Roehl is that they are weak on miles, respect your hometime, tend to be rather anal about knowing what you're doing. They won't argue about you running safe and legal and while we complain a lot about their shops, serious issues with the truck will get dealt with as well as any issues that would be a dot violation. I would recommend Roehl to anyone starting out as a driver or who needs guaranteed hometime. Their hometime fleet is the best of any company out there.
