Sad..... now the only nation that can get to the ISS is the Russians, I'm not real comfortable with that.....

We started with what 5 shuttles.

    We lost 2, or 40%.

Would the program be considered a failure because of this ??

Not by their standards. They'd look at it as two MISSIONS that failed, compared to the overall number of MISSIONS in which a shuttle didn't blow up.

Apollo 13 was officially considered a "successful failure" because they didn't get to land on the moon (mission failure) but they got the men home alive, so it was "successful".

In the end it all comes down to the logic of government bureacrats regardless of any actual FACTS though. :biggrin_2559:

A sad day indeed........I live near the Johnson Space Center so I can personally attest to the economic impact NASA has on my area.

Depending on Babloopski and vodka to mount a rescue mission or push a satellite into orbit was a foolish decision.

Several former astronauts including Armstrong and Lovell wrote a letter to Hussein asking him not to do this.....stay the decision and mothball 2 and you see what he did.

Bush said " It's a dangerous world and this guy don't have a clue"...... thank you George, I agree.

It's already a given and accepted FACT that Zero doesn't care about spending and in fact is spending us so far into debt we'll never dig our way out. The space program cut was NOT because of the spending it would require, obviously.

The space program was a symbol of national pride & a source of patriotism, and that is certainly something that such a blantantly obvious ENEMY of the United States would have a problem with. He shut it down as part of his plan to demoralize the country and eliminate anything that was ever GOOD about this country.

NASA fought for the life of the shuttle program under Clinton and Bush. The fact is that the Russian lift vehicle is cheaper and more reliable than the shuttle program and NASA has failed to decided "whats next" in terms of human space flight. Sure we could pump a couple of hundred million dollars and kept the program running but it wouldn't have accomplished much. Instead now NASA has to innovate and move forward like they haven't had to since before Regan.
