Took my air cooler off thinking it had a leak in it...Found a little trace of black smoke on the welds on upper right corner of the cooler..Question is how much of a leak does it take to make a difference in power and fuel mileage..
Its on a 2004 379 pete with about 980k miles 525 mbn engine.. Thanks ahead of time for replies and comments..

There are some that would argue effectively, that more than a 2 lb drop in 15 seconds is the borderline. That might be unrealistic in the real world. Even though Cummins puts their limit at 7 lb, if the CAC for my ISX gets to 5 lb, I am going to put on another one. 7 lb is really making the turbo work harder than it should at that point, and fuel mileage is going to take a real hit.

You took it off? You know what the cooler does right? The cooler takes the intake pressure of the turbo and attempts to lower the temperature from compression before you allow it into the manifold. Cooler intake will allow greater horsepower. No intake allows the fuel to destabilize more easily.

Hope you didnt have a warranty left on that truck. You just voided it.

The black stuff is not from exhaust.

You think maybe he might have taken it off while looking for the leak, and NOT as a permanent solution LOL :biggrin_25526:

first of all,I hate to sound rude, but why the hell would you think he took the cac off of a 2004 379 and ran it with no cac on it? thats ridiculous, use some sense. he simple took it off to test it.

second of all, why would there be any kind of warranty on a 2004 with 900,00 miles on it, again, all it takes is a little common sense of what you just read.....

Just saying, hope he is not trying to run with out because he saw unknown black comming out of the joints. I know of some locals that did run their cummins up here without the intercoolers, ran great in the -20 winters here, ran like crap in summer.
