Another way to look at too, I was a Quick serve Restaurant manager... better known as fast food... making $35,000 per year plus benefits, and working 70 hour weeks because so many people today don't think $10 per hour is a good starting wage... And then having to learn some russian so I could communicate with the temp workers being brought in from eastern Europe... 6 month visa...
So I put myself through truck driving school, and then signed on with stevens... making $35000 per year, and enjoying life, and not dreading getting out of bed. Money is not the total picture, but many today think money is all that is important.

There are benefits to Stevens that many prospective drivers don't know to ask about.
For instance: All Stevens trucks have APUs. You don't have to worry about idle restrcitions, DMs getting all over you about idle times or being warm in the winter.
Stevens maintains their equipment superbly. You don't have to arm wrestle someone to get something fixed that's important like an illegal tire, AC compressor or weak batteries.
Stevens equipment is new. Many companies out there buy used trucks with 500, 600, 700,000 miles on them and go from there.
The amount of breakdown time is far less with newer equipment.
Stevens is fiscally solvent. Their checks are good. Not so with many other companies out there.
You never throw chains. If you've never done it before (on a truck), you can't appreciate how great that is!
Stevens has a Safety Dept with teeth. They truely follow the rules. Not some lip service, then a dispatcher that penalizes you for not 'going the extra mile' (illegally)
If you do your job, Stevens has plenty of freight. Yes..there are time you sit, and there are poor weeks sometimes, but that's the trucking business.
Stevens consistantly works to improve your skills and makes your driving better.
Every driver has different needs and wants. Just because one driver values hometime, doesn't mean someone like me that doesn't care, or takes hometime all over the place is not happy.
If you're 30 years old and full of vinegar, throwing chains might not matter. But when you fall over the dark side of 50 or 60, it DOES matter.
TLea is right. Money isn't everything.
I have a great truck, I get all over, I enjoy my work...and I make 'decent' money (more than the national median average for blue collar workers)
So figure out what you want and then check it out. -
Nice of you to list all the attribute of Steven's but not once did you mention the three things that matters to most drivers. Pay. Oh wait you did and it was described as decent. When in fact it is subpar. Hometime and benefits.

venne Thanks this.

Did we forget the other two items? Hometime and benefits? And its not about chasing anything its about getting a fair days pay for a fairs day work. Not a subpar pay for a days work.
Rollover the Original Thanks this. -
you said three things pay...
And did you forget, nobody forces you to work for Stevens...
It is a personal choice, and you are paid what you agreed to work for.
Your idea of subpar pay for a days work is another persons idea of being rich.
It is about finding the career that one wants to do, and finding the place you fit in with, and not all jobs are for everyone, and not all places will fit with that person.
I am being paid a fair wage for a fair amount of work. -
I lasted one week in that field. That was all I could take. Walked out and told them they were grossly underpaid (this was back in the mid 90s, so the salary was mid-20s).I'll take trucking and the associated love/hate relationship any day of the week! -
venne Thanks this.

Pay is pretty important to ME!! But my job isn't to defend stevens all the time! Its sure nice to work for a company that doesn't have idle restictions. They are a knit picking company cause I have friends that made stevens there choice. Its funny how there attitude has changed from there the best to I can't wait til my yr is up.

oh I forgot yea they have frieght but if your new plan on doing LOTS of short trips. Its plan and simple they are a starter company. Most large companies have new Equipment and they lease it and maintain it. OH you forgot to mention the bonus they trainers get for suckering some poor sap into a lease.
