Good way to trash a transmission...It has to do with a large gear running up against a tiny gear and that results in a lot of heat and damage.
You can hear the damage being done if you listen to the howling noise from the transmission when you're in that gear.

We used to have idiots at a company that I pulled for that called it "The Secret Hole" and thought it was real cool to use it until they started losing transmissions prematurely and Ol' Jim started firing drivers when he found out what the problem was.

That's the first I've heard about the large gear running up against a tiny gear being the problem. I've also heard that the oil pump didn't work when it was in the low hole - which made sense.

Ya, I did too, it never seemed to shift when you wanted, and there was no way to cheat.

I'll back you up on fuel economy. Miss Daisy used to jump up to about 7.5 on loads under 40k and between 6-7 on the heavy stuff (45-63k). Miss Daisy was the oldest truck in our fleet, 02 with a fresh engine, 13 spd, and about 1,000,000 on the odometer. Seems Swift didn't like the 07 and newer freightshakers for heavy running, so they were sending the oldest ones back for factory rebuild. Everything new or rebuilt but the body and frame.

    I miss that old rig.

Man I am feeling the love from you guys, I have a question. How many of you Super Truckers every even drove a truck with and engine smaller than a 290? (80,000) 13 speeds shift in the Transmission 2 Speed Shift in the Rear they both split shift, I was just trying to make it simple. Oh I also spell Ditroyt like this.

Whine all.you want to about it...But you're still wrong. There is no shifting going on in the rear end
    Oh....By the way I drove a 165 Cummins (no "g") in the early 70's with a Dana-Spicer 4X4.
