If a company pays for insurance and some have habits that will increase their rates, I think that they should have the option of not hiring those individuals. It is the same with those who have speeding tickets. Carriers have the option of paying higher insurance premiums or not hiring those with moving violations.

That's easier said than done. I've heard that it's easier to quit a heroin addiction than quitting smoking.

I managed to do it back in 2002 or something (barely) but 2 years later I was stupid enough to smoke a cigar somebody gave me and I was right back on the Philip Morris train.

In 2002 when I quit, the only way I was able to do it was the fact I was in San Diego babysitting my sister's 7 yr old daughter for an entire week while she flew out to Japan to meet her husband's submarine. She left the car full of gas so I wouldn't have to stop at a gas station, and since it was just me and a 7 yr old kid for a week straight, nobody was smoking around me, and I didn't have a reason to go anywhere they sold cigarettes.

Its real easy just go to the all you can eat T/A and eat til eat hurts then pack your truck with candy bars and chips!Make sure you are full before you go to bed! If you are forced to go to a sheety pilot or flying joint make sure t get a triple burger and soda. don't forget the ice cream!! oh and make sure you park real close!! heck just park on the fuel isle. Less walking is better! by the way you need to make sure you pick up a couple of cartons of smokes! (that will help you relax and pass the time) If you focus on your food stops you will enjoy living like a fat cat trucker.

The BMI Stats are a joke !! you are under no obligation to take a BMI test by fed law ...you can refuse to take the test and make it clear to them if they force the issue you will sue them for discrimination, They make you take the test on what grounds? you have a big kneck? Please !! whats next ? if you bite your fingernails you have ADD? I worked for a big companie and they pulled this crap and i asked them what medical Rule were they asking me to take the test for? they could not come up with one .. they asked again the next day i told them i talked to my attorny (Handed them his card) and said i would not be taking their test, never heard another word.
All this is is the insurance companies forcing the co's to comply with their Rules to get a better rate, and we let them do it ! One day we will stick together and stop this silliness:biggrin_25518: it just wont be in our lifetime.. :biggrin_25518:

Too bad there is no intelligence test around here to post.

    There is no "BMI Test"

You have a height, you have weight, therefore you have a BMI number.

BTW it is Federal Law for a driver to take DOT physical... Height and weight are required.

Overall, those DOT standards are the minimum, a company can require whatever standard above those minimums for hiring.

The way they calculate the BMI, a guy could be very muscular and have a BMI index that was high just as easily as if he was fat.

Thats why only overweight people fear the BMI and unless those overweight folks happen to suffer from sleep apnea, theres really nothing to worry about.

If someone is concerned about their BMI being too high, it would be a good time to start working on getting your weight down. You can lose weight by watching what you eat. Cut your carbs and eat smaller portions. Stay away from the snacks. Keep some fruit in the truck if you get hungry and drink lots of water.

Absolutely no argument with this. The military has been using BMI for decades as an entry gateway into the ol' "fatboy program." We had a sergeant in my unit, 6' 5", 3% body fat, totally muscles. And he was always getting dinged by the computer at the personnel office to be on the weight control program. At least once a month, every month, he had to go fight the BMI battle. And that was total Bravo Sierra.

Where else is there an OBJECTIVE way of looking at whether a person's weight is in proportion to their height? This isn't being used to single out overweight folks for embarassment... sleep apnea is real, and fatigued drivers cause serious accidents. The alternative is some schomoe who looks ya up n' down, and just arbitrarily decides who gets tested... don't PO this guy!

Employment law in this country allows a business to discriminate on employment and set standards for employees as long as it is germain to their job function. For JHC's sake, this is a transportation industry that relies on people to SAFELY move product across the nation's highway system, without crushing little 3-year-old Susie to death because he fell asleep at the wheel. And that is the issue... keeping everyone alive on the highways, not whether you feel embarrased about your weight.

Either butch-up and zip your mouth at the buffet feed bag, or bend over and take the test. But for JHC's sake... stop the #### whining!
