What I was referring to was when you haul a coil or a load in the middle, that tail end of the trailer is usually bouncing more than when you have a load spread out.
Start paying attention to someone hauling a coil and you will see what I mean.
Why do some truckers dislike flatbed trucking

Flat bedding makes you THINK and Work. Some people dislike this and some are incapable.
T-RIX Thanks this. -

What about a single coil that nets 45K?
You put that on the nose or the tail of your wagon?
Uh....Not me....I like to have a balanced load myself....
Most of the bagged/pallet loads (Silica sand, roofing, block....) are center loaded...
Loads like that I treat the spread like it was a tandem....
No more than 16.75K on each of the spread axles or on each of the drives....
Doing it that way guarantees I have room for fuel (Important during the winter running the Rockies...) and No over gross fines.....
Some shippers #####.....But it's my rig...Not theirs.... -
You can put 40K on the tail....Legally......
-
OK, I think some missed my point. I understand that I can do 40k legal on the spreads. With my van I can get 45k loads legal but will likely be running half tanks to stay legal. With the APU on top of the already heavy Volvo I have to be a little more carefull.
So when I saw "center load" I was concerned that what I had learned was incorrect. That being that if I needed I could have the load positioned to make sure I am happy (legal) with the distribution. And if that is 3 feet back of center, so be it.Last edited: Jul 25, 2011

What he was saying is you can be 40k on a spread axle where as you can only be 34k on a tandem, so yes you can distribute more weight toward the rear a little to be sure if you want to. It's you trailer you tell them how you want it loaded.

Yeah, understand, my post was not worded well.
Thanks allouterspacehillbilly Thanks this. -
Ok....now that were on the same page.....
If you own a newer rig with a DPF/SCR and a larger sleeper....Word of advice...
Load your flat like it's a tandem.....
No more than 16.75K per axle on the spreads and the drives......
The new rigs are heavier....But that doesn't register with shippers....
Most of the shippers on flat loads like 48K net on the wagon.....Many now want us to carry 50K....that can't be done legally with a new Large Car......
Sad thing is....a spread axle and tractor can safely go to 86K per the Bridge Formula...But you run 80,400 on the interstate....you'll get popped....
Do the math.....
40K on the wagon...
34K on the drives....
12K on the steers....outerspacehillbilly Thanks this. -
Vans and flatbeds are both for pansies.... Real men pull a bull wagon.....

Lol this should be interesting.....BigJohn54 Thanks this.
