Try a 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in a half glass of water. If it doesn't ("heartburn") doesn't disappear within seconds, see a Doctor.

If it disappears, probably heartburn, if it doesn't, probably Angina.

Good Lord!!! I've never had a problem with heartburn. I turned 36 this past May and every dam thing I eat seems to end in heartburn. Have I crossed some invisible line or what? It's depressing actually. Today is my youngest daughters b-day(she's 10 going on 25) and the b-day cake is killing me. I got the oldest one on a baking soda run right now. The worst part is, other than this heartburn I still feel like a teenager(act like one too to hear my wife tell it). I fear this is the beginning of the end of my youth. How much longer before gout sets in? How much longer before all I want to watch on tv is the weather channel? How much longer before I'm wearing socks with sandals, plaid shorts and a button down shirt? Good Lord just kill me now.:biggrin_2553:

Yes, heartburn hits many with age. Most is due from the over production of stomach acid and the valve above the stomach doesn't work 100%.

Your best bet is to get a prescription from your doctor. Most costs $4 a month at Walmart, Rite Aid, Walgreen's and others. Over the counter you pay out the ying-yang. Either way, you need a daily regiment of heartburn pills and you can eat away.

There are trigger foods you can avoid. Oregano got me bad before the meds.
Spicy foods, chocolate and sodas are a few. Seems I can eat anything now.

A little med advice on this. Doctors prescribe twice the dosage of the over-the-counter versions. On the shelf you'll pay 10X the amount.

I been on four different kinds over the years because of changing doctors and all seem effective.

Pantoprozole (Protonix) cuts back the stomach acid production. It is the most expensive at about $72 without insurance. But it is very effective. Doctors prescribe 40mg a day.

Ranitidine (Zantac). Doctors prescribe 300mg versus the 150mg over-the-counter. Walmart carries the Equate brand of Raniditine and is the best over counter value. Very effective. Presciption you pay about .12 cents a pill versus $1.30 a pill otc for half the dosage.

Omeprazole (Prilosec), Doctors prescribe 20mg twice daily versus the 10mg twice daily over the counter. I like it just as well as the rest. Very effective. This is what I'm on now and works great.

Famotidine (Pepsid), Doctors prescribe 20mg twice daily versus 10mg twice daily over the counter. Works good, but it is my last choice.

If I were you, buy some Equate Ranitidine 150mg at Walmart. Start at 150mg and if that doesn't do the trick take 300mg and I guarantee you it will do the job.
ASAP, go to the doctor and get a script to save $$$$. Ask for one on the $4 month program.

    Bigarmin88 and zebcohobo Thank this.

heartburn and GERD is caused by lower than normal levels of stomach acid, not excessive levels. the esophageal valve will not remain closed if stomach acid levels drop below normal. the valve relaxes in the absence of sufficient acid levels and you belch it up.

next time you experience the symptoms you can prove it to yourself. just take one tablespoon of a good (preferably organic) grade of apple cider vinegar (acid) and watch what happens.

angina is caused by narrowing of the coronary (heart) arteries. some cayenne pepper (vasodialator) mixed in water will ease the pain and it will also stop a heart attack dead in its tracks.

in response to the prescription recommendations:
ALL PRESCRIPTION DRUGS POISON THE BLOOD.

protonix side effects: headache, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
zantac side effects: confusion, depression, headaches and constipation.
prilosec side effects: headaches, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, rash and back pain.
pepsid side effects: constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, headache, insomnia, agitation, anemia, confusion.

PANTOPRAZOLE (pan TOE pra zole) prevents the production of acid in the stomach. It is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), inflammation of the esophagus, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

OMEPRAZOLE (oh ME pray zol) prevents the production of acid in the stomach. It is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcers, certain bacteria in the stomach, inflammation of the esophagus, and Zollinger-Ellison...

Ranitidine (trade name Zantac) is a histamine H 2-receptor antagonist that inhibits stomach acid production. It is commonly used in treatment of peptic ulcer disease ...

FAMOTIDINE (fa MOE ti deen) is a type of antihistamine that blocks the release of stomach acid. It is used to treat stomach or intestinal ulcers. It can also relieve heartburn from acid reflux.

Of course all medications have side effects. But the ones that suffer are a minority. Side effects are from patients reporting to the FDA what they are feeling. You might have a patient on 10 different medicines and doesn't know what is what. He might make the same report on all 10. So the accuracy of some side effects can be misleading.

You might think medications are bad. But people are living longer now than they ever had. Mainly because of medical care.

And if you think Cayenne pepper is going to save you from a heart attack? Good luck!
Narrowing of the arteries means it's clogged. A heart attack is when the heart muscle gets insufficient blood flow and dies.

Unless you are eating 100% organic, you are polluting your body with all kinds of chemicals.

"Narrowing of the arteries means it's clogged"

no matter how much you insist to the contrary, narrow and clogged are two different words and the fact that one condition can exist without the other further differentiates the meanings.

Heart burn could be a sign of a heart attack. When I had my 2nd heart attack I was having non-stop heart burns. So it's best to get it checked.

You weren't having heart burns, you were experiencing angina.

Been there and done that, had a double bypass 16 years ago and i thought I was having a lot of heart burn. NOT !!!

How old were you PB? Looking at your picture, you had to be young. I had my first stent 4 months ago. 99% blockage but no heart attack. I was real close. The only thing I felt other than out of wind was my upper throat hurt real bad. The last day my chest felt tight.
