Just curious, as to hear from as many Drivers as Possible; what they think of-or their experiences they have had or presently with passing through DOT weigh stations, as well as any changes to rules and regulations.
Here I'll kick this off.....
Back in 2008, I was traveling west bound from NC, after haying had just picked-up my load and heading to California, When I got to the port of entry of New Mexico, I was pulled in for a level 3 inspection; it was random-according to the DOT agent (Sacrcasim). When we were done outside, I was asked to come inside the station. There was a young man in uniform behind the counter, who didnt even look like he had graduated from high school yet.
The young man had my drivers licence in his hand, as he motioned me over to the counter, and proceeded to tell me that he notice I did not have the state of NM's, Federal Tax ID Permit, in my paper work, then he said to me that I was able to purchase it right there for $70 bucks, he also stated that if I refused to buy it right then and there, that I would be shut down until I was willing to do so.
I became very suspicious, and asked him what was it, and told me it is for all motor carriers business, that have a Federal ID number attached to their Business License; I then told the agent to excuse me for second; I then proceeded outside to go to my truck, and make some phone calls. It was late in the evening around 10pm, on the weekend; and as I stated earlier I was under a load, so I knew I had to act quickly, So as I called some Drivers I knew, They all were saying that this was the first had heard of such a thing-one Driver I knew told me if that is all it will take to get me away from there, pay the $70 dollars and get the hell out of there, so thats what I did and it worked.
Now when Monday came I started calling around to a few place; like the Fed Motor Carriers, Some service companys that Process ones Applications for Authority licenses as well as permits, I even talked to somes Drivers at the TA,s and Petros, on my stops, along the way of delivering my load, and they all said they have never heard of such a thing.
Strange Right; this is done to all Drivers including the big companies, without warning or prior notice based on what I saw-thoughts anyone, or has anyone had a similar situation or any situation, at any of the of the other chicken coops around the country, that may seem strange to you? -
You paid their weight distance tax. You can find more information here.

In my experience the folks at the NM ports are some of the friendliest in the country. Now, if you didn't get a weight distance tax number by registering with the state those friendly folks are gonna allow you top pay at the port and not fine you for the oversight. Oregon, not so nice. Just my opinion.

I paid the fee there one windy day. I told them since I had paid they should turn the wind off or make it a tail wind.
One of the guys winked and stated that the east bounders had paid more to get the favorable wind. -
Your first mistake was " I even talked to somes Drivers at the TA,s and Petros". That's a great way to get legal information. Why didn't you call the New Mexico authorities to verify?

Got level 2'ed at Wadworth, OH recently just because I had CRST Malone on my door. ISS = must inspect.
I was squeaky clean of course but still wasted 45 minutes of my time.
C'mon you Malone chumps. Y'all are draggin' me down with ya. Get your act together.
