there's a gu y on ebay with bunch of flatbed equipment. $1600. just about everything needed for a fb trailer. cept bungees and bungee rope.
don't why he has so many tarps though. but he even has haz placards.
apparently he doesn't haul loads higher then 4ft. -
All I ever needed was 4 foot drop tarps. If you haul steel you do not really need the 8 foot drop ones, and when you bid a load it will tell you which you need. Just do not do the ones that need lumber tarps.
We used several 16/32 and 16/20. You need 3 for a full load. But much easier to move around, store and roll than the lumber tarps. Just depends on the area's and freight you run though. Nobody wants to lump around lumber tarps if they do not have too. -
The biggest thing is the head ache rack we are having a hard time finding a place in boise that sells them. 1bad's boss is going to sell us tarps and chains. We have a little time before we will need the rest of the securement equipment.

So far breaking into the owner operator arena has been hard for us. From finding carriers to work for to purchasing the truck. There have been alot of highs and lows along the way. We still have a long way to go before we have the truck ready to go out on the road but its an experience we both are looking forward to both the good and the bad and most of all the freedom.JJ.,
The Challenger Thanks this. -
i get a lot of wood and sheet rock. 6 feet high. i've had one 8 foot coming out of walla walla.
i also hauled a load of plastic pipe that was 8 feet out of denver. and required a smoke tarp.
the chains hardly get used. oversized rebar uses 3. cars happen on occasion and take 12. 90 % of my loads have been straps.
but that'll probably be different being on your own.
sounds like your not going the LS way????
we don't have headache racks. but i'll most defenitly be getting at least a wall when it's time for me.
that freeway in oklahoma city needs to be put OUT OF ORDER. 35 was my top speed through the city. and i had to reposition my load of 2 x 4's
are you going to be one of them double flatbed truckers?Last edited: Jul 31, 2011

jjranch Thanks this. -
I sent you a couple of messages JJ.
But basically check all the trailer manufacturers, or do searches for Cab protectors.
If you have your own trailer you do not need a headache rack unless you do not have a bulkhead on the trailer. It is either or, under the reg.
Depending on what you haul you will need different numbers of chains, binders, and straps.
At least 1 of each for every 4 feet, plus 2 is minimum. Plus several extra binders. When you have to belly wrap chains you really need a binder on each side. They loosen up when you move and it is best to re-tighten on the opposite side.
So that is 14 straps and 14 chains. 17 or 18 binders. 4 2" straps for those spots you cannot quite get one (wheel wells and other spots).
This sounds like allot. And is a little overkill. But better to have it and not need it. And you will break chains and binders at times.
Also get the ratchet binders, not the pop ones. They cost a little more, but are much easier to get the proper tightness.
All of this and the tarps will all depend on what you are hauling as your primary haul.
If you will need a set of 8' drop tarps, at least 2 coil tarps which are small and have allot more tie down spots. At least 3 4-6' drop tarps for when you do not need those 8 foot suckers.
As you know, the flatbed company I ran for was mostly steel. But on back hauls we hauled many other things. Lumber, mulch, supersacks of lime, Palleted bags, shingles, you name it. Had to be covered no matter what. Always have one cheap blue walmart tarp of good size also. Just in case you are a little short on tarps, you can put it in the middle to fill a small gap.jjranch Thanks this. -
Still looking at going to Landstar and they require a Headache rack/ cab protector. Going to be hauling a stepdeck so no doubles lol and we just won't pick a lumber load.
Thanks for the Info Chrome! It made my search much easier pretty expensive little sucker's aren't they!
Straps, Binders, chains and Bungee's aren't a problem as 1bads boss is selling us all those pretty cheap. The Challenger Thanks this.
