Pardon me if this is the wrong forum section. I am new to this industry.

I am wondering how this will affect the future of United States truck drivers in terms of pay, benefits, loads, work availability, regulations and most importantly, JOBS.

I have read many articles about the deal that was passed on July 6 by LaHood. I'm not interested in what politicians think, I am interested in what truck drivers think.

I have searched the forum and saw a small thread in the news section but I didn't see any real discussion on it.

Is it even worth discussing or is it an avoided topic?

The last thread on this was moved. I imagine to the political section as that is what it turned into. I don't know passwords or frequent the threads that require them.

Duly noted. I'll pass on it then. I like talking politics less than I like sliding down a razor blade into a pool of alcohol.

Me too. This subject and carrying a gun in your truck seem to always turn political.:biggrin_25511:

Now don't get me wrong, I have strong political and religious views. I just try to keep them out of everything else.:biggrin_25512:

They never seem to improve a thread and just lead to angry people. I find people with screen names or avitars of a political nature offensive. With most of them, as soon as they start to type you realize you don't need those aids to know their politic views.:biggrin_25516:

Guess I better shut up before this becomes a political rant. Surely you have to favor a side for that to happen.:biggrin_25523:

Mexican trucks will turn out like 99% of other earth-shaking news stories, it will be a yawner. It may not be the end of the world like Y2K and most any other multi-day news story, but it won't be 1% as bad as the stories we've been hearing for the last few years.

Opening the border to cross truck traffic will have an impact on the American blue collar worker. In this case, the truck driver. That's not political. Just a fact of current American history in the making. No, the sky isn't falling because of this, and some people and areas might not notice. But please don't forget that the ATA, representing the big carriers is pleased as punch, and groups representing independents are not. That's not political either. Just reality.

My issue with this has always been safety. Anyone who's driven in Laredo would agree. Those Mexican drivers are nuts, plain and simple. They're more concerned about speed than common courtesy. They will pass me in no passing zones, swing a left turn right in front of me, cut me off after passing so they don't miss that turn or exit, etc, etc.

Our highways are bad enough, why make them worse? Oh, right, money and greed.

Any time you introduce more competition to a market there will be repercussions. Our government is paying for the retro fitting of EOBR's and other things so that it will be easier for them to compete with those of us who are paying for their upgrades. I don't see an immediate impact, but do expect some long term effects. It is likely that they will undercut rates to get business. Judging from what I have seen from them in the past, they have little regard for our laws. They are not supposed to pick up and deliver in the U.S. They are only supposed to bring freight originating in Mexico to the United States and then reload to go back to Mexico.

We have seen Mexicans come here and take American jobs in manufacturing, construction and other industries. There is no reason to think it will be any different with trucking.
