When I was laid off - I was a restaurant Manager making roughly $1300 a week. As it has been with almost every locality in the United States, there were not that many jobs available, and the ones that were available payed so little that it made ZERO fiscal sense to take them when my unemployment pays DOUBLE. I have a house, a 12 year-old daughter, car payments, insurance, etc. Which is the more responsible thing to do? Search for jobs that can pay the bills and not accept something that will put further strain on myself and my family? Or should I have taken an Assistant Manager job at McDonalds which pays $10 an hour, go on food stamps, sell the house for 20% less than what it's worth, rip my family from the place that we've called home for 7 years, and start over?

I waited out as long as I could, cut back on expenses, and put the family on a tight budget. Now I'm in a better financial position and even though I have almost exhausted my Unemployment Benefits, I know I waited as long as I could to find a suitable job without extensive re-training or borrowing money to get my Masters Degree. My best option at this point is to use the WIA Grant to help pay for my CDL.

That sir, is the American way. Providing the assistance and training programs for Americans to better themselves. Nobody ever made it on JUST hard work alone. If that was the case - I would have stayed in the Marine Corps and became an Officer.

Kind of reminds me of the current debacle in our national government, the republicans don't want to raise our taxes from the lowest they have been in #### near 70 years, and the Democrats don't have the balls to demand that we make REAL CHANGE to the uncontrolled spending on the Military and Medical Industrial Complexes.

It didn't work out for me. I had my appointment the other day and was basically told that I wasn't going to get WIA for several reasons including that I have ONLY been unemployed for 4 weeks and I've had previous training (computer training 4 years ago right as the economy tanked and I can't get a job in that field because of the massive competition).

There are other programs for you just remember the Federal government as over 16 different worker retraining and other grant programs. Heard this on C-Span2 by a senator-republican! Try vocational rehabilitation if you have any barrier to employment this includes physical and mental reasons. Also call the US Labor Dept and ask them or your states labor and industries dept. If all else fails then get a small private loan most companies pay you back for training! Good luck

New here, and found this thread. My experience has been (so far) that WIAWV has been pretty easy. The TABE test thing is 75 questions in three sections, 1 English comprehension and 2 math broken into regular 'visual' math problems (1+1+5= kind of stuff), and 'applied math' (figuring out how many tiles for a room, for example). You have to score '9' or above to proceed with process. Then you have a bunch of 'homework' to do. You have to talk to 3 companies in the career field and get basic info from them (pay, benefits, etc). Then talk to 2 people working in the field to see how they like it, what they don't like, blah blah. Fill out your personal expenses and explain how you'll pay bills while in school. They basically want you to make sure you want to do it and will be able to survive while in school and get a job afterward.
If all goes well, they pay the school (Rumsey for me) and away you go!
    Good luck!

Anyone in Texas had any luck with WIA? Not sure if it will get any funding this year. Maybe it will next year, if not I'll just finance it.

Wow, I didn't know HACC had CDL training. I'm originally from that area.

BTW, hate to get political, but there is no uncontrolled spending on the military, and I'm not even sure what you mean by "medical industrial complex". Sounds like a term from the 60's.

I'm currently an Insurance Broker (both health and life) and trust me, your tax dollars are not going to pay for any Insurance Companies. I'm not even sure what federal dollars (tax money) goes to your local hospital if any. Fact is, those are not the only two areas that need to be cut. How about reducing the size of that MONSTROSITY known as the Federal Government. Delete most of the worthless pointless agencies that do nothing more than interfere in everyone's lives. Maybe get Nancy Pelosi to reimburse the taxpayers for her frequent flights on the 757 she's been using, and the $100k+ ####tail bill from all the drinks on that plane.

I could go on and on.... but seriously....

Yeah, you should have picked up any job or TWO or THREE instead of taking unemployment that long. Just my opinion, ain't worth much, I know that. Little thing called pride I guess. Besides, you'll get more respect from an employer working a McJob than you will not working and on unemployment.

And seriously.... claiming that the American way is the GovCo handing out retraining and so on? I think you need to read the Constitution and spell out exactly where that is written. And yes, plenty of people HAVE made it on JUST hard work alone. I'm not sure you can compare that to becoming and officer in the Marine Corps though. Plenty of loser officers out there, trust me.... I know. You can make it in the civilian world, but you'll not do anything if you don't bring your "A" Game. And yes, you should be open to picking up your family and life and MOVE TO WHERE THE EMPLOYMENT IS. Humans have done that throughout our history. Move to where the food/game is. These days it's no different. Cities dry up and the expectation that the rest of the country will support you while you stay in a dead city (By dead, I mean a place without any industry or employment that will support a family and house) is ludicrous.
