Hee Hee, don't think they are sleep driving, but momentary lapses driving overnight is common. The darkness with white dots coming at you like a video game is hypnotizing after a few hours. Its easy to correct in a four wheeler, but a loaded 18 wheeler episode might be a little scarier. Its part of the price of optimizing travel time ovenight on Interstate highways. Fresh air helps. Day time rarely ever happens. That would be a real good application to have a surveillance camera hooked to laptop for an alarm if get close or over white lines :biggrin_2551:

This really isn't new at all folks. Sleep deprivation studies where used to set the new HOS. This is where they finally wised up to how horrid the old HOS rules were to the human body. This is where the 24 hour day (14 and 10) came from.

I read a report not too long back where, at 8 hrs the human body is still able to work at near 100% doing a normal days work, at 10 hrs the efficency drops to 75%, at 12 hrs it's 50% - the figures speak for them selfs!

Well yeah, mine is 2 or 4 wheeling and taking about 2 or 3 x 1-1/2 hr sleep cycles Friday evening before midnight; and then pulling another 26 hrs optimizing Friday night 600 miles travel, Satuday business hours in Atlanta, coming back on Saturday night 600 miles, and then sleep all day Sunday. I'd never do it in an 18 wheeler though, but it makes a 3 day weekend work out with cat naps and extreme attention. Easier on a motorcycle than in a pickup truck with fresh air.

But with 14/10 rules, it should not be a problem although can't travel as fast (unnoticed anyway) in an 18 wheeler.

BTW, Has anyone heard of a new device that monitors and detects whether a driver is sleepy? It's supposed to be an electronic device that tracks other things (position, hours driven, maintenance, etc.) with the added feature that it can also detect if a driver is getting sleepy and warn the driver to take a break soon.

Has anyone here seen or heard about this type of device?
