Used to drive a 07 Volvo 670 - Cummins ISX 530, that thing would pass every single truck on all inclines and still average between 7-8.5mpg. Drove it with the speed limits 75mph in the states that allowed it. 750k miles at the time.

There are three important things that can really effect your engine operation and fuel economy.

    1. OIL: Make sure you not running too heavy of an oil. I'm a strong believer in Synthetic Oil. Run as light an oil as the manufacture will let you.

    2. FUEL CONDITIONER: Diesel fuel is pretty crappy. There can be a lot of junk in it. Use of a good fuel conditioner additive with every tank full will pay you dividends. Modern fuel injectors are real particular about getting clogged with foreign particles. Clean fuel injectors will give you more power, better fuel economy and perhaps fewer fuel injectors to replace.

    3. THE AIR CLEANER: Often an overlooked component of your engines breathing system. A dirty air filter will cost you. A really dirty air filter will really cost you. Changing that air filter every 90 days is not too much.

I'm now getting 6.7 to 6.8 loaded our empty at 58 to 62 mph. 10 speed ultra shift 3.42 rears. 06 d12 engine. Not too many hills. I use lucas upper injector cleaner every other fuel up and change oil every ten to twelve thousand miles. Was hoping to get even .5 mpg more. I see there are people getting that type of mileage.

If you switch to synthetic oil, you can extend your changes to 25,000 miles with no problems. Just change your oil filter every 5 to 7 thousand miles. Synthetic oil does not break down like regular oil. Synthetic oil is not effected by heat or cold.

You would think if they can get a car to go 40 miles per gallon they could get a truck to go 10 to 15 per gallon.

Yep, but arn't they restricted to 54mph? The sleepers are only about 30 inches from the back of the drivers seat to the back wall of the cab. The UK gallon measurement is larger than a US gallon, odd but true.
