I used to run wreckers in/around/through Chicago. I had sense enough to GTFO. I'm still in Illinois, but a long way from that craphole city.

I have the limits at home and I own a camper. When I hook up and go camping, I am not a truck.

When I am running around town I am not a truck.

When I drive the fire truck, it is not governed by truck laws since it is not commercial.

Our tanker is a 3,000 gallon job and I imagine it is close to 50,000 lbs. Maybe I should take it to the scale.

As to the original question, it depends on the reason for the restriction. Your bobtail is still 19,000#. Chicago also has a lot of low clearances. I've been to two different locations in particular where we have to go around the church to find the steeple, so that we could avoid low bridges.

No point in driving anywhere if you can't park, get out, and do what you needed to do in town, is there?

Fire trucks are exempt from A LOT of laws, rules, and regulations....don't need license plates or a CDL to drive them. The fact that you even bring them up is a friggin' joke...proof that you are stretching to try to justify your position.

When you are running around in the city, if your truck weighs more than 4500#, is registered as a "b" truck (8000#) or heavier, you can receive a parking ticket. If you are on a street with truck restrictions, you can receive a ticket. That doesn't mean that you WILL receive a ticket, just that you CAN be ticketed if an officer sees you, knows the city ordinances, and feels like writing the citation. The fact that your cop buddies aren't familiar with the city ordinances does not mean that it is legal....just that they aren't familiar with that section of the municipal code. Ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking it.

You are talking about parking. Yes, my truck is over the 4500 and it would get me in trouble up there if parked on the street. I usually park somewhere and take public trans.

I am talking about being on the road.

I am not stretching anything. I drive in Chicago alot. I rarely park on the street, it is not safe.

I do not worry about truck law signs, because they are for commercial vehicles.

My brother in law is a hard nosed bear who would give his wife a ticket. I believe he would be willing to write one.

The problem is that I am not commercial and you are stuck on the bobtail issue.

A commercial truck HAS to follow truck laws.

A pickup is not a commercial vehicle unless it is being used as one.

If you are bobtailing you are still in a cmv, and all rules and regs apply. Does it mean you will be ticketed no but you could be. I drive Chicago daily, and those signs are eveywhere, but mostly on side streets, and a few larger streets. I have an ocassional stop on Clark St. and Ridge just north of were Ashland Ave. and Clark merge, I uaually take Western N. to Foster E. to Ashland Ave. N. up a few blocks and I am there. Problem is Foster just west of Ashland has said sign with weight limit 5T, it is only for a block or so, so I do it as I am only a 3/4 a mile or so from my destination and an alternate route is not the best option as far as time goes, so I chance it drive just under speed limit and am very carefull, the CPD has better thing to worry about than me.
