I definitely want to try to get on at Schneider. Applied yesterday and should be talking to a woman who recruits there tomorrow.
Today we had our "top driver" skills test for our class. Good news is I would have passed at DMV. Bad news is that I had the lowest score in our class. Of course there's only four of us. It's a bit frustrating, but then I've never towed anything in my life, so backing a trailer is a whole new non-intuitive skill for me.
I expect to do better on the road since I've driven manual transmissions all my life.

You will get the hang off it soon. Just takes some practice. Just remember when backing follow your trailer and forget about your tractor. The tractor is basically one huge steering wheel used to get the trailer where you want it to go.
pumaman, T-RIX, blktop-bucanear and 1 other person Thank this. -
We went to DMV last Friday. I didn't think I was ready, but the instructors were able to get us in, and wanted us to try. I managed to pass air brakes and pre-trip, but couldn't get in the alley dock. So I'll have to go back to re-do skills and do the drive. I just need another day of practice and I'll be fine. Got to hook up and pull a double set of trailers today, that was interesting and went well. Also passed the written tests at DMV for tankers and double/triples.

Went back and passed skills and road test today! What a relief. Thank you to Byron and Rodney and Eric at CTDA. And thanks to my fellow classmates who were so supportive. Soon I'll be out making some money for my new company, and for me.

Gears Thanks this. -
Most excellent! Congratulations
!!
Make the very most out of every opportunity. -
First two days at orientation have been busy and hot! Lots and lots of info and skills and company specific policies to learn. Just trying to hang on and stay positive. The instructors are very good people, so that helps a lot.

Did they outline your process till you are on your own? I just mentioned in another post that PAM Transportation accepts student drivers and pays for their education (not as good as your certainly) on two contingencies: 1. You are contracted with them for 12 months. 2. You must team driver for the first 6 months.
So with that company you don't get to be on your own for 6 months. What if your teaming partner has gas? What if he is a racist slob? What if he touches you funny when you try to sleep, or maybe he will try to spoon with you? Maybe he will steal my lunch. Maybe he might never say word just staring at me trying out figure out when the best time to stab me would be. What about pranks like shaving cream on my hand while I sleep? Swapping my water bottle with his pee cup? What if he listens to rap music?
So did they tell you the time frame till you get your own rig? Does Schneider do all slip seat? I wondered about that when I seen they want the trucks at their terminals.
Serious congratulations on the job man!
