The turbo is off a 3406E 1LW 475/550 engine. You'll be buying a turbo sooner or later. The longer you wait the more chance you take at exploding the one you have now. I'd upgrade as soon as you can afford to, because when it expodes it will cost you twice as much to fix out on the road. I can get you a BW upgrade turbo that will handle 725 Hp with no problems, PM me if you're interested.

1LW , 5EK , 7CZ , 5DS and there are many more , they are the first three digets of the motor SN# its the group the motor belongs to . the guys that tune on them can tell you alot about your motor with those three digets

cool thanks alot, its nice to have good info shared without all the "poking fun" that i seem to get when i ask questions on here ill go check it now
-
mine is the 5ek any info on this motor as far as helping with mpg or adding a little power would be helpfull thanks

The 5DS doesn't have as many options in uprating with a file. I can gain you roughly 40 Hp with a file change and maybe another 40 with a fuel code change. I did one for a fellow at Louisville last year and he was happy with the changes I did, he picked up a few tenths in fuel mileage also.

I've got a 3406E in my 97 Pete. It has the 550 low-nox file in it and Cat and Peterbilt say they can't change that file now that it's in the ECM. I've heard of people putting a file out of a 3176 into the 3406E and it's supposed to give a lot of power. Does anyone have any advice on this? What kind of consequences can I expect?

Welcome to the forum Derek.
Cat has to fallow a protocol and that's why they say they can't change the files but, there's many that can do just about anything with your ECM.
What you hear about the 3176 is, on some cases you can get the ECM from a 3176B rated to 365 hp and put it on your engine and it will take it to around 700 hp, but then there's a lot more than just hp on an ECM, and to be honest I have never seen a 365hp 3176B, not that they are nonexistent ,it's just not many of them and that engine hasn't been produced for more than a decade.
