I am new at this. For my first job I will be flying to Connecticut tomorrow to shuttle fixtures from Walmart to and from the warehouse for a few weeks. I know, it is strange. Please don't ask, I prefer not to say too much. The agency was desperate. I drove one day for them yesterday, my first day ever. I want to ask some questions. Remember I leave tomorrow so I know this is too late.

I will be picking up a rental truck and couple trailers from Ryder in Hartford. Anything I need to know about rental? The company made the arrangements.

I will be driving the tractor everywhere, like the hotel at night and sightseeing on the weekends. How much personal use should I be able to get away with?

What is a good way to learn the rules in Connecticut like right turn on red or other surprises?

If I want to go somewhere and the sign says no trucks is the rule any looser if I am tractor only?

Since I have no idea what I will get into what should I take with me?

Since I will be flying I don't want to take much in the way of tools. What is essential?

    1) Not really, but check the tractor/and trailers out really thoroughly when you pick them up. Check everything especially and body damage and note this on the rental agreement. Make sure the agent acknoledges this. (very sleepy can't spell right)

    2) Better check with your agency; i would say 1-2 miles off route to get something to eat or see an attraction is reasonable. Then, on your off days maybe up to 10 miles is reasonable but check with your agency.

    3) Probably the connecticut mva website.

    4) No and i would obey each and every sign strictly.

    5) Not sure based on the info you've given me; Need more info and detail please.

    6) You'd be surprised how much tools you can fit into a suitcase. Will expand upon this later.

NO NO and NO! No matter if your fully loaded, empty or bobtail as far as the law and DOT are concerned you are a 73 foot long, 13'6" high, 8 1/2 foot wide, 80,000 pound truck. Even bobtail it doesn't matter.
As far as your other questions, most of them involve your carrier and I have no way to know what your out of route or personal use rules may be. But like Powell-Peralta said, make sure and look over that rental real well so that no preexisting damage can be tossed back on your head.

    Thanks.
I did find the answer to 3, yes.

I am not sure how to expand for #5. It is like planning for the unexpected. For me there are a lot of unknowns, so I don't know just what to ask. I figure I should have money in case I have to buy fuel but since I haven't done this yet I don't know what to expect.

On #6 I know I can get a lot in, it is the weight I am worried about. Airlines have a baggage limit.

    2 crescent wrenches
    Pair of Chanlocks
    One each screw driver
Fold out torx set(star looking allen type)
    2 Vice grips(8")
    Fubar

Basic tool kit I keep in a small bag in case I gotta jump in a day cab or something. I can fix most if not all minor repairs at least to get to a shop with that. May weigh 4 lbs(?).

    Thanks,
Torx I didn't think of. I can't picture what I would have to fix with that.

i'll be adding stuff in here and there (very busy) but for now:

Ryder is actually pretty good as far as road service so you don't really need that many tools for this "mission." They can probably have a service truck to you within an hour regardless of where you are in connecticut. Plus, their trucks are in very good shape to begin with so a breakdown is highly unlikely. It's still a good idea to carry tools though and i'll add my thoughts later. Tazz gave good suggestions for a start.

As far as #5, yes very good---the money part is important. Do you have a few credit/debit cards? It's also probably a good idea to carry some cash although i rarely carry more than $100. But then again i don't do true OTR where i'm gone for several weeks at a time.

    Also toilet paper/towels
electric razor (if your skin can handle it. i don't know---i'm ASSuming you're male?)
    An ipod/satellite radio
Some say a CB is essential. It probably is, although i haven't run with one for years.
There's more can't think of it now.

    More later.

I personaly am strongly against using a truck for private use. Many people do it but I find the principle wrong.
Its up to you and if they have given you the ok then its your rite but I would keep it to a minimum.

A video of the vehicle can also be good.

You not in over your head, you can do it you just need to believe it and trust in yourself.

On using the truck for personal use, better check eith company to see if this will be allowed, If caught using with out permission could cause you to lose your job, Better safe than sorry, pending how concerned you are about your job
