We are looking at 2 different trucks and have probably narrowed it down to either a 2005 Volvo VNL660 or a 2005 Freightliner Columbia. Does anyone have any input of either one? Good? Bad? Positive? Negative?

Is one better than the other for mileage? Is one more prone to breakdowns than the other? How hard is it to get either fixed if they break down in the middle of nowhere? What's the average life of either?

Anything posted will be useful. I will crosspost this on the Freightliner and the Volvo areas...just in case.

    TIA

Well... How is it speced? Engines? Trannies? Rear end? Mileage? Wheelbase?

If that Volvo has a Volvo engine then I'd automatically pick the freightliner. If that Volvo has a Cummins, then I'd pick the Volvo.

Freightliner will most likely have a Detroit or a Cat... Detroits get decent fuel mileage & Cat's don't.

Honestly the new volvo D13 are not that bad. Being a D12, I would avoid it. If it has a cummins, then it is a good solid motor without the dpf. Only the EGR which is not a necessity if you do not run cali.

My wife and I drive our 07, 670 every day. it has a D12 and has run well, I have found that most company volvo's are truned down so far that it would make you sick. When i first got my truck i had 280,000 on it and i was able to pull 44,000 with out much trouble getting 6.2 mpg. It wasn't till the company put in the people net that everything went down to 5.8 or lower depending on the route I had to take. It wasn't the people net, it was the company and the shop. although the company said it was for the fuel milage, I'm a lease operator, that was not very honest of them. It was for their Safety rating. The Truck and Engine both have performed well with little repairs, yes it has 2 EGR valves @ 1500.00 each, there are a lot of electrical problems, but with 610,000 on it today we are still happy with it.

I ordered a new Freghtliner Classic in 1995 with a 475 Cat and a 10 speed tranny. That truck went over a million miles before it was over hauled. I just got back into trucking 2 months ago and now own a 2007 Volvo. I feel the Volvo 670 is a truck designed by drivers. IT rides better handles better and is a more driver friendly truck. I would order a new Vovlo in aheart beat. The Volvo has more interior room and a ton of storage so much so that serval of the storage campartments are still empty. My Volvo has a D12 motor with a 13 speed tranny. I miss the big power and torque. But I would rather take more home at the end of the week instead of being first to the top of the hill.

If you have a god maintaince program and fix things right the first time instead of JEER rigging something you will do well.

I'de choose the Volvo- only because I'm in a Columbia. If it has a Mercedes engine, they can be nightmares to repair and keep running. Same thing for the auto transmissions. I truly believe Columbias are throw away trucks. They're frail, light, corrode easily, seem to have a lot of electrical problems. To be fair though, they're spec'd that way by the companies that use them- I guess you can put the premium wiring in it, insulation package, heavy duty A/C, and heavier duty parts. So it depends on how it's built, how it's been treated and why it's on the used truck market.

Nah, I'de still take the Volvo.

I hate organic Volvo people and the way they do business but I love my Volvo and I would not replace it for anything in exchange. I am doing long and very long haul and for me the comfort and quietness means alot. Oh c'mon u can't even compare a Columbia with a Volvo(any model).
But let's not forget that from time to time a Volvo owner has to go to the Volvo dealer, then the circus begin.

That has got to be the best comparison. LOL.

To add, a lot of Columbias I have been around have front tire wear issues.
