Gotta figure out what you love to do, just like everyone else. Trucking isn't for the faint of heart, and does put a big strain on the family sometimes - especially if you're looking at long haul. I just started back a little bit ago - I'm loving the road, but my wife hates me being on it.

With that being said, I haven't found another career out there that I'd consider more rewarding for me on a day to day basis. I'm a bit off though... :)

REALLY look at the business implications if you're serious about doing this. If you want to get a license, authority, and pull for yourself, make sure you have enough capital and someone with enough business sense to help you make it happen. If you want to pull for someone else, make sure you really understand where they are getting their loads, what you're going to get per mile, are they paying a salary, are there any benefits, where you'll be pulling, etc..etc... there's nothing worse than working for someone that is forcing you to go to places you don't want to go for low pay.

Too many people just jump into trucking without thinking through a lot of the aspects involved. A LOT of them fail. So, just take the time to think through it logically and you'll be fine.

About a year ago, I trained a Officer, Think he had around 12 yrs as a
Police Officer. Not sure about his family?

Hes been driving with a great work record, Great Guy. Been here about
13 months, when alot of others drifted back to there old jobs, or
found another way of life, Hes still enjoying his new career.

...as you fuel 4-5 times a week. Once doughnuts were almost paying you to eat them...

Well I can't believe it's been 10 years since I started this thread! I did decide to finish my law enforcement career before I go into trucking. I now only have 1 year and 7 months to go before I can retire from this but who's counting :)

I'm still planning on driving a truck as my next career. It's close enough now I can taste it.

I'm curious to hear from some of the other police officers that answered this post 10 years ago. Are you still here and how did the trucking thing go for you?

Please don't become a truck driver for safety. It's like 3 times as dangerous as being a cop. Also the money is worse... And you're 12 years from retirement. Very good option for after retirement though. Hope for a buyout IMO.

You didn't read the rest of the thread, or even the last post, or pay attention to the dates, did you?

@TROOPER to TRUCKER ... any input for @milby ?? (also, @milby... you can search some of T to T's posts/ threads. He left L/E to drive for Averitt, but ended up getting injured OTJ.)

Well actually retired. I had a bad experience with Averitt. I also needed to be home for the time being but did love otr and may go back actually hauling for a local ranch or goldmine.
