And the beauty of waiting at the rig is that you're getting paid for it.

Not trying to argue, Just trying to help the op with his question. I was told I don't know squat, I simply posted the regs as they are written. When I made the first post it was based on 7 years exp with a CDL. I don't claim to know any where near everything there is to know. HOS was my specialty at the last company I worked for, if any 1 had questions they came to me. I spent many hours researching the rules to find ways around them for the guys I worked with. Due to the fact the majority of our hours were spent out the truck on job sites, we had to some times find our way around the rules so that we could make it to the next job site so we could make money.
Yes the oilfield exemption allows for waiting time to be posted as off duty for oil field specific vehicles. I don't know if the vehicle he will be driving fits into that category or not. Like I said, if DOT don't know about you ain't gonna get nailed for it.

Got called out, had to defend myself thats all.

    Peace

Tell him to ask the company man for a place to rest. Many have an xtra spot in the bunkhouse. Also, I may be wrong being in a different part of the country, BJ services up here and what I have seen usually have sleeper trucks.. On second thought, Halliburton has sleepers and daycabs. I guess it all depends on the operation. Believe me, somtimes I was working 60 hours strait, my logbook was all nice and legal.

And yes, being paid for everything you do and every hour waiting is awesome!!! Im going back to it on Monday.

The truth is you will not run legal for the most part in the oilfield. I've had to sit on location in a daycab for 36 hrs before waiting to get unloaded. I've had to run balls to the wall for 24 hrs straight before. Most companies try to run as close to legal as they can but it's almost impossible with what we do. If you can't handle long hours then don't even get into the field. The money is good and the work really isn't that hard. But I've seen more over the road drivers come and go because they wouldn't work for more than 14 or drive a truck with some bad tires.

I like the idea of long hours and getting paid for all of them. I am only doing research for my hopeful future in the oilfields. I like to go into something like this fully aware then when it happens I knew in advance the decisions I was making.
