Hi-
I think my eyes are going bad. I occasionally see trucks and trailers with single rear wheels instead of dual rear wheels (2 wheels on each side of the axle). It looks like the tires are somewhat fatter than normal.
Is this a trend? What are the advantages/disadvantages?
Thanks!
single rear wheels?

Small sleepers are making a come back.single small fuel tank.no pass seat.an every one loves super single tires. Ya can haul more freight. They always wear funny.they float on snow ice an water.in mud thats good.only a few run mud. An when their flat ya cant idle down shoulder to get fixed.or even park in safe place.

These two posts pretty much sum it up !!
Super singles on the steers in mud suck they tend to go straight (no bite) when the wheels are turned, I fought this on a tri axel dump all summer even with the tag axel up...fancypants Thanks this. -
Singled out axles are frequent in LVC. Less Tare more Net weight. Fewer tires to wear and are not needed to reach GVW. I don't like them but drove a lot of 8-10 axles w/ 3-5 axles singled out.

Supposedly, they give a truck better mileage. (at least that is one of the selling points) Never driven with super singles on the rear.
Drove flat bed straight truck with front floats for years, work great in the sugar sand down here in FL. But got better mileage with standard fronts. -
The only advantage I can see is less weight...but not enough to justify the numerous disadvantages. But, that's just my opinion.

I pulled a spread covered wagon with super singles back in the mid 90's I can tell you first hand if one blows out your not going far.....
back then they were harder to find so road service took forever..
CondoCruiser Thanks this. -
still takes forever, one of our drivers sat 12 hours in ND waiting for a rim/tire on the side of the road, no one had them they ended up puting a set of duels on that side of his trailer

Well what do you expect in NoDak, there are more people living within a 20 mile radius of me then there are in all of NoDak.
