I've been a dry van hauler for 3 weeks. Coming from hauling crushed cars and scrap. I never thought that being at the mercy of a shipper or reciever. Appointment times, being met, but ur on hold from 2 to 8 hrs due to issues at shipper or recievers. Equipment issues or not enough product to fullfill a customers order.
What was ur worse event?
The perils of a dry van hauler....

im not a O/O but i do pull dry vans,
I was told D/H at Miller, Trailer already loaded pickup between 0800-1500
I get there at 1300.....and told not going to be loaded until 11pm the NEXT DAY because some tax stuff was changeing and they would lose a few dollars if they ship before the change but if they wait until after they can charge the customer for it......
So i got to sit for over 40 hours and wait in the middle of nowhere no showers/food, and then had to deliver a day late......all that for a 700 mile run.

Pulled a two pickup in NJ, one drop in IN load. Pickups went off without a hitch (mostly). Get to the delivery point 12 hours before my appointment time, get a place to park in a fenced lot (Sweeeet!). Bump the dock 20 minutes early, and arrange the required lumper. 10 hours later, still sitting on the dock waiting for the truck to be unloaded! Missed TWO great loads in the meantime. The problem? The dock supervisor couldn't decide whether I brought enough product...OR TOO MUCH!!!! Wow, it wuold be nice if they taught basic counting in schools these days...

I do mostly all flatbed but the company also does dry van and some refer. I have waited as long as 12 hours to unload 8 pallets at a large grocery DC. I will take my flatbed any day in 100 degree heat.

This happened in 2001. Dropped trailer in Long Beach Port Friday Afternoon (1300 PST). Told to BT to Ontario (TA-West) and wait for a load. Pre-Load info popped in at 2200 PST, midnite at the home terminal. Told 24-hr yard. Nope is was a total snipe hunt. Back to TA West. Come 0600PST my QC is screaming (WHY AREN'T YOU RUNNING!!! ect ect ect)
Politely explained that Pre-plan didn't hit till dispatch closed, and the info was wrong about 24-hr yard.
Nothing until 1000PST. Pre-plan dropped, QC-FF said to get that trailer I drpped back. Got back to Long Beach at 0800 on Saturday just to have to deal with a Hispanic version of Dumb and Dumber who's command of the English language was less than appropriate for the job. Finally (1030 PST) a supervisor told me the trailer was already load planned and to get lost.
Dispatch spent 3 more hours arguing until the guy relented (under threat of arrest) and released the trailer to me. To top this strawberry poopcake off, the trailer had been vandalized. 3 tires and 4 cans of spray paint later, I get to drive to Lompoc and sit for three hours waiting for the night dispatch guys to "find" a trailer I was sitting next to. Total time to screw that pooch: 32 hours. No reimbursement.
At least the guys at the Lompoc mine were nice enough to let me stay the night. -
Took a load to Dalton Al , getting a HOT reload same place. Customer emphasised that it had to be there no later than 10 AM Monday morning REGARDLESS .
No problem arrived at 7 AM they took me right away , reciever was happy but asked why a WEEK EARLY
.
Turns out their product manager SCREWED up on the DATE as he was so worried about the TIME.
Worked out ok , did 4 regional loads for them that week , and was sitting there at 10 AM on the CORRECT Monday to get my HOT reload. -
Why does everyone find the need to call someone dumb or stupid in theses threads. The driver mentioned to be dumb is probably a company driver and had no control over the situation. Also he may have drawed detention pay and just didn't mention it, as we all know is still not as good as turning miles.
I am not trying to start a fight just saying think before you start insulting people.American-Trucker Thanks this.
