1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Does Solo Long-haul Exist Anymore?

BB, you may want to check out Kennesaw, since they are right down the road, they advertise that they have longer freight. And since they pull reefers, you may even be able to get some of it.

I worked for RE Garrison for awhile and they will work you if you're willing to run. Probably the best place I ever worked other than my job now. Only reason I quit was hometime. Actually that was partly my fault because I needed to make money so the longer miles didn't get me through home as much. I would have nothing against working for them again if I needed to.

Thanks for the info everyone -
I have sent an email to Garrison and maybe will talk to them Friday.
Kennesaw limits solos to shorter routes and saves the west and NW, and Danny Herman is on the lower end of the payscale that I would accept (about the same as Averitt and USXpress who have invited me to join them).
Ironically, today I stopped at the Shaffer HQ (I left them 4 years ago to go to Crete) and they have approved me for rehire so I may simply return there in order to keep all my seniority, my benies, and my payrate.
I also hope to hear from Shaw Transportation when I get home Friday as they have a higher pay scale than Crete/Shaffer, and offer weekly hometime.
    'preciate the help!

give Quality Carriers a try. I have a friend who goes st. joe-shakey-shortsville,ny-st joe. pay is real good and i think they have a terminal in your area. check contract because each terminal is different. ask about kosher loads out of west coast or chicago. oh yeah you do have to go to tanker school for I think its a week no matter how much experience you have. hope this helps:biggrin_25519:.

I just left Crete Carriers after 4 years - they are part of Acklie (Sunflower, Shaffer, and Crete) who I have been with since 1997. I was told I was being forced to switch temporarily to a lower paying dedicated fleet and I refused. No options were given, so I quit.
I may very well though, return to Shaffer for their SE regional fleet.

Are you familiar with an outfit over in Henegar, Alabama (off I-59 up north)?
I've emailed them after seeing a Sunday ad looking for solos to drive "mostly" western runs and SE regional.
Otherwise I've gotten another offer from a Chatt firm, EFI, Express Freight, which runs SE to Texas. Lower pay (36cpm to start) but the miles would make up for it.
Still waiting to get thru to the Shaw recruiter. Will know by the end of the week where I'm going.bruce.

I wasn't able to find a quick reference to a good long haul company so I accepted an offer at Averitt Express to take a position labeled "Chattanooga regional driver". That was a mistake.

Averitt is not for me. I finished up orientation and was just left with a bad taste in my mouth about this company that for all the good people I met, just seems a wee bit too cultish. No individualism there at all - an army of 1. Physical appearance, uniform appearance, behavior modification, and misleading information have left me deciding to not call in for work and get my truck monday morning. I'll return my uniforms and take a $ hit for wasting a week with them.
    - Orientation was underpaid;
    - The DOT doctor with a suspicious conflict of interest can flag a driver for physical attributes that make him have "potential" for sleep apnea even if there is no behavioral evidence of it. A driver must then pay out of pocket for a sleep disorder evaluation that involves high cost and an overnight stay at a sleep center.
    - Their doctor also mis-diagnosed my vision and when presented with an optometrists report (also paid for out of my pocket) did not change my DOT long form - it shows falsely that I have 20/50 vision and require glasses.
    - A job description begining with "Chattanooga regional driver" apparently, I was told on the last day of orientation, refers to a driver's domicile region, not his driving zone.
    - I would never accept a lowly 37 cpm for running a full service area that requires me to drive in Chicago, Detroit, PA and NJ.

Tomorrow I will initiate contact with Watkins Shephard, Shaw Transportation (Dalton, GA), and Pemberton Truck Lines (Knoxville, TN). Watkins Shephard seems to hold potential for long haul, while Shaw and Pemberton offer home weekend dispatch. We'll see.

Man, I'm sorry to hear about that "experience". Did you check out R.E. Garrison? I was just curious as to what they had to offer you. Let me know if I can assist you any further.
