Headed to Melton

I started working for Melton back in 2000 right out of driver school! Melton is a good company. I no longer drive for them because I have a local job hauling heavy construction equipment now! They always got me home when I wanted, and the miles were great! My trainer was great also. I think he is one of their million milers now. (Spanky) I have thought about going back to work for them lately. If they had a regional out of Ohio I would be on it like fly's on horse poo!

 

Thanks convoy,I would like to get some flatbed experience. I like to be active and work,sitting at warehouses is boring.

 

Just know that there are no trainers now...you go through a 4 day orientation where you learn securing/tarping and you get into a truck on your own...

 

Hey Leroy, I no longer work at Melton. Got a local gig. I left them about 3 months ago.

 

I'm heading to Melton next month. I would like to know what the orientation is like? I have been working locally for the past few years hauling lowboys. But my company has laid me off do to lack of work. Do they make you pay for your physical/urine test, hotel room, etc. My old company made me pay for my physical/urine test, etc. I'm really excited to go work for them. But if anyone can give me some of their experience they have had with them I would appreciate it. Thanks

 

Melton pays for your physical and drug screen. They put you up in a hotel, where you will share a room with another driver. However, you can pay for a room by yourself for a little extra. But, I'd wait till you get to orientation for that because you might end up getting one by yourself...maybe your smoking preferences wont match anyone else, or your roommate might want his own, or maybe there is an odd number of people in the orientation.

The orientation itself is 4 days long. First day you do the physical and drug screen, then balance test and lift 3 rolled tarps. Then its fun with paperwork! Day two is more classroom first half, untarping second half. Three is load securement and more classroom. Last day is road test and tarping, along with more class. At least that's how mine went. On the last day, you'll get your certificate, fuel card, company ID, and $160 cash for the orientation.

 

Last day is road test? That's odd. Also what if you take longer to learn load securement? They still send you packing?

 

Did I say that? hmmm...I meant first day lol I dont know why I said that. Road test is the first thing we did after lunch the first day.

 

I am considering calling them as well. I have not had much luck finding anything local. I don't have unemployment coming in, but the fact that they set you on your own after only 4 days is kinda scary; especially for someone with little experience.

 

Are they still using the 13 speeds or did they go all autoshift?
What kind of trucks do they have now?
