I've seen drivers set up an individual battery just for their invertors. But the labor was done by CFI's shop. So I can't tell you exactly how it was set up. But I can tell you how it worked, as explained to me by the driver.
They bought a deep cycle battery, and had it connected to the charging system with a switch that could be disconnected when parked to avoid draining the main batteries. Their invertor was connected directly to this battery. They simply flipped a switch when they were rolling to allow the battery to recharge.
I still find it hard to believe that they used a microwave with this set-up, because I had to run my truck to insure enough juice to properly power my microwave even on a 4 battery system.
This setup would provide enoough juice to power a small fridge, laptop, and tv overnight with no problems.

If I'm working rural, waiting on grain to be loaded for instance, would the 3G allow me to surf, etc? I'm very challenged on connections that aren't dial up, although installing DSL if and when they ever get it here in the boonies sounds fairly easy. I have the feeling I may be out of luck using my laptop on the farms too with wireless?
-
DSL isnt good in the middle of nowhere. It works by having varous stations or substations or whatever in an area. Lets say you live in a town. Depending on the size of the town...there might be one or many DSL stations in that town. The further you are away, the slower your connection is.

I feel so wireless challenged! Thank you and will look into it

I dont know much about wireless myself. I just know from personal usage I guess; we have wireless in the house that my wifes computer runs off of.
However, I don't know about other ways a laptop can connect to the internet. I mean...if your out in the middle of nowhere but still have a cell phone reception...Im thinking there is a way to get online via a cell phone? Maybe not. Anyone?
How does everyone else on here get online? -
You probably don't want to have an xbox 360 because in the manual it says to sit at least 5 ft away from the power source as it emits radiation.
-
Another way, instead of having a manual "switch" is an electronic ####ch, it is called a BATTERY ISOLATOR. It connects both set of batteries (the trucks and the battery for the accessories) to tha Alternator, but only sends a charge to the battery that needs it. "Juice" wont bleed from one battery set to the other either. Costs about $90 plus instalation. -
If you have Sprint, particularly the "VISION Plan with Voice", you can use your cell phone as a modem, if you have the proper phone and USB modem cord. Drivers are found on the Sprint Website. But don't call Sprint and ask them for help, they will want to charge you for this service.
Alternately, you can get a Sprint Broad Band card and get unlimited service for about $60 per month. -
Sprint has a PCMCIA, Mini-Card and USB card for Broadband connection to 3G that is faster than DSL (excellent) if you are in a 3G area, or as good as dial-up in any other Sprint Service Area

can you then hook up a desktop computer instead of a laptop using a usb wireless card and save the money on the price differnece laptop/desktop?
